pardon of God comes when the sinner is not able to make a pretext for his
wrong doing .

. One who knows the world , the world tries to be chaste , and a true believer
never goes after useless things , unless he is taken unawares and when he
recohnizes his mistake , he feels sad .
- God provides everything to
one who worships God .
- 1.Whoever fears
Allah (adopts piety), He (Allah) paves for him a path of salvation
out of the trials, and directs him (onto the right path) in his affairs, and
facilitates his (path) of guidance. And makes his proof (and arguments)

guarantee, for the one whose heart does not harbor other than satisfaction,
that if he supplicates Allah, he will be granted.
- 9.One who lacks
intelligence has no decorum, and one who lacks determination has no
magnanimity, and one who has no modesty has no religion

from the unlawful and you will be a worshipper, and be
content with what Allah has predestined for you, you will be sufficient, be
benevolent to those who take up proximity in your neighbourhood, you will be
a Muslim.
- 11.Do not be hasty
in punishing (someone's) sin, and leave (room) between the two (fault
and punishment) for apology.

Habil.

this world, but you know is unattainable, in the same rank as that which does

knowledge, and learn from their knowledge. Hence you would
have become adept and learnt that which you do not know.
- 22.You are the most inferior
amongst a nation, when you could be on the verge of dignity amongst another
nation, therefore learn the knowledge, and those of you who
cannot memorize it, consequently, should write it and place it in his house
- 23.There was not a
nation who consulted (amongst themselves), but was directed to a path
of guidance
- 24.I wonder at a person who
ponders over the things that he eats, how he does not ponder over his
reasoning. He preserves his stomach from that which harms him, yet
deposits in his breast that which is a cause for his destruction
- 25.It is for you to
ponder, for it is revitalization for the heart of the perspicacious
and the key to the gateways of wisdom.
- 26.(describing a
good companion of his) He was prestigious in my view because the
world was small (insignificant) in his eyes. He was a dissident, (departing
from) the domain of ignorance. He would not extend a hand unless he is sure
that benefit would come from it. He did not complain nor become enraged or
impatient despair. Most of his life he kept silent, but when he spoke he
silenced the other speakers (surpassed them)
- He was perceived weak, but
at time of struggle he was a fierce lion. In the gathering of scholars, he was
more eager to observe silence than speak. Even if he could be exceeded in
speaking, he could not be excelled in silence.
- He would not say what he did
not practice, but practiced (deeds) what he did not say. When he was
confronted with two matters, not knowing which was nearer (more pleasing) to
Allah, he would ascertain of the two that which was closer to his personal
inclinations and then oppose it. He would not reproach anyone
- 27.O' Son of Adam! Since the
day you left your mother's womb you life has been on the decrease. Therefore,
avail yourself of that between your hands for the hereafter,
because the believer takes provisions (from this world) and the disbeliever
only takes his leisure (from this world)
- 28.Allah, the Great and
Al-Mighty, did not open the gateway of invocation for anyone,
to then shut off from him the gateway of response. Nor did a man open the door
of action, to then have the door of acceptance shut off from him, nor was the
door of gratitude opened for the servant, to have the door of accretion
(plentiful) shut off from him.

- 35.Do not struggle hard like
a successful (searcher) of material and do not depend upon destiny like those
who surrender to it. (Neither greed nor laziness). Because
seeking the Grace (of Allah) is Sunnah and not being greedy in seeking

sustenance, nor does greed attract grace, because sustenance is (already)
apportioned, and being greedy is being sinful.

who experience have also experienced that nothing surpasses forbearance in
effectiveness and nothing is more pernicious as lack of it . With patience all
affairs are rectified and nothing else can replace it .
- I have never seen any right
with no wrong in it but death , which is so Similar to wrong with no right in
it .

- Hazrat Qasim was the
youngest son of Imaam Hassan (A.S.). Qasim was born in 47 A.H., three years
before his father was martyred. When Imaam Hussain prepared to leave Madina in
the month of Rajab 60 A.H. Qasim mother Umme-e-Farwa asked Imaam Hussain to
take her and Qasim with him. Imaam Hussain agreed. Hazrat Qasim, although only
13 years old, had, like his cousins Aun and Muhammad, learnt fencing from
Hazrat Abbas and Hazrat Ali Akber. Hazrat Abbas was very fond of Hazrat Qasim.
On the night before Ashura when Imaam Hussain was passing by Umm-e-Farwa's
tent he heard Qasim say to his mother, "Mother, tomorrow Uncle Abbas, Ali
Akber and I will defend Imaam Hussain. Mother, if I get killed please do not
weep for me." Umm-e-Farwa replied, "My son although I dearly love you, I shall
not weep for you. Nothing will make me prouder than to see my son give his
life for Islam". When Imaam Hussain heard this conversation he prayed to Allah
to bless Hazrat Qasim and Umm-e-Farwa.
On Ashura day after Aun and Muhammad had fallen in the battlefield, Hazrat
Qasim came to Imaam Hussain and begged for permission to go and fight. Twice
Imaam Hussain refused saying "Qasim you are young and your mother's only son".
Hazrat Qasim was very disappointed. He went to his mother. When she saw her
son so disappointed she remembered that just before he died, Imaam Hassan had
written a letter, given it to Umm-e-Farwa saying ,"If ever you find Qasim in
difficulty, give him this letter." She gave Hazrat Qasim the letter. In the
letter it was written, "My son Qasim, a day will come when my brother Hussain
will be facing an enemy army of tens of thousands. That will be the day when
Islam will need to be saved by sacrifice. You must represent me on that day."
Hazrat Qasim read the letter. He smiled. He rushed to Imaam and gave him the
letter. After reading the letter Imaam Hussain said, "O my brother's son, how
can I stop you from doing what your father wanted you to do. Bismillah, go.
Allah be with you".
Imaam Hussain tied Imaam Hassan's turban on the head of Hazrat Qasim and
helped him mount his horse. As Qasim was riding out, Imaam Hussain said "Inna
Lilla-hi Wa Inna Ilai-hi Raji'oon". Hazrat Qasim said "O my uncle - Do not be
upset. I do not fear death. Death for Islam will be sweeter for me than
honey". Hazrat Qasim came to the battle field. He was a very handsome boy.
When the enemy saw him, they began to murmur, "How can we kill someone whose
face is shining like moon?"
In a loud and a clear voice Hazrat Qasim introduced himself and cried out a
challenge for single combat. He killed several famous warriors who came
forward.
Every time he felled an enemy Hazrat Qasim would stand on his stirrups, look
behind and wave to Hazrat Abbas, just as a pupil would seek approval of his
teacher on any assignment, Hazrat Abbas would proudly wave back. When the
enemy saw his bravery and realized that they could not possibly over power him
in single combats, they came from behind and one of them hit Hazrat Qasim on
the head with a sword.
Hazrat Qasim tried to go on fighting but alas he was so young and he was so
very thirsty! He fell from his horse crying out, "YA AMMAHO, ACCEPT MY LAST
SALAAMS." Imaam Hussain and Hazrat Abbas rode out. The soldiers tried to stop
them, when finally they came to where Hazrat Qasim had fallen they saw a
dreadful sight!! Hazrat Qasim's body had been trampled by the horses of the
soldiers who had tried to stop Imaam Hussain and Hazrat Abbas. Hazrat Abbas
was so angry when he saw this that he began to shake with fury. He took out
his sword and wanted to attack the enemy. Imaam Hussain restrained him saying
"Abbas, have patience, dear brother. Do not give them an excuse for saying
that we attacked them first".
Was Qasim body carried to the camp to his mother? This is not very clear. It
is reported, however, that Imaam Hussain took off his abaa, spread it on to
the ground, gathered the pieces from the ground as one gathers flowers from a
garden!
- Disasters and hardships are
keys to rewards and compensations .
- A blessing is a Divine test
, therefore if you thank God it remains a blessing , but if you are ungrateful
it turns in to God's wrath .
- The benefit you get from
your tongue is enough for you to distinguish the path to guidance from the
route to aberration .
- Don't ever regret deep
reflection and rationalization because thinking revives the alert heart and is
a key to doors of wisdom .
- Oh thou the son of Adam !
Since you were born you were busy destroying your life . So try to provide
provision for the world hereafter in the rest of your life . Indeed a true
believer makes provision in this world and an unbeliever regales himself and
then he recited this verse : " Make provision ( in this world ) indeed there
is no provision better than piety . "
- Some one asked Imam to give
him a piece of advice . He said : Get ready for your last journey , and before
death arrives prepare yourself some provision and be ware that when you desire
this world , death desires for you .
- To day you shouldn't think
about tomorrow's sorrows .
- And be ware that whatever
wealth gathered by you , if it exceeds your daily sustenance , infact is saved
for others .
- And be ware for the lawful
wealth of this world will be duly counted , and the unlawful wealth is
followed by punishment ,and there is reproach in doubtful wealth .
- Therefore consider this
world as a carcass and take only that much that suffices you .
- In this case if it is lawful
, you've performed a virtuous act , and if it is unlawful you haven't
committed any sin because it sufficed your urgent need , the same way you may
eat a carcass in exigency , and if there is any reproach in it , it will be
little and light .
- Behave , in this world , in
such a way as if you will be living forever , and for the world hereafter act
in a way as if you'll die tomorrow .
- If you had to become friends
due to a want with a man and associate with him , Be friends with a person
whose association adds to your dignity and when you do him a service , he
supports you and when you ask him for assistance he helps you and if you say
something , he confirms your words and if you attack , strengthens you in your
assault and if you asked for something , assists you and if your shortcoming
is revealed he covers it and if he sees any good deed performed he takes it
into account .
- One prayer of he who recites
Quran is accepted by God either immediately or with some delay .
- Imam Hassan on whom be peace
: The Prophet of God ( P.B.U.H ) has said : Any one who recites " AYAT - OL -
KORSI " ( verses ) after obligatory prayer will be under the protection of God
till the next prayer .
- Any fasting person can have
one prayer accepted at the time he opens his fast . So when you take the first
morsel to open a fast say : " In the name of God , oh God thine forgiveness is
over whelming and abundant . Please forgive me .
- Imam Hassan on whom be peace
: The Prophet of God ( P.B.U.H ) he said after performing morning prayers
anyone who sits in the same place and keeps invoking the name of God until
sunrise will have a curtain and a barrier between him and the tormenting fire
of God .
- Whoever is found of praying
, purifies and adorns himself for it.
- It is becoming of a man on
fast to dye his beard and put perfume on his clothes and It is becoming of a
woman on fast to comb her hair and put perfume on her clothes .
- I heard it from my father
that the messenger of God said anyone who tries to satisfy the need of his
Muslim brother , his endeavors are equal to nine thousand years of worshipping
God with days spent on fasting and nights busy with praying .
- Giving alms tax never
results in decrease of wealth .
- I feel ashamed of my God to
meet Him while I haven't performed pilgrimage to the House of God on foot
- When one of you meets his
friend , you must kiss the place of light on his forehead .
- He whose death is due asks
for time to compensate for the misdeeds of the past and one whose death is not
due and has time to perform good deeds , procrastinates .
- Oh those who seek pleasures
of the world ! You should know that they are transitory and taking pride in a
shadow that vanishes is absurdity .
- Once a house maid presented
him a bunch of flowers and because of this the Imam (as) set her free. He then
said that it was because of how Allah (swy) has disciplined us and he stated
this from the Holy Koran, "When you are greeted, you should respond in even a
better way or just return the greeting."
- Once a person from Syria on
a horse back met the Imam and started to abuse him but the Imam did not
respond. When the Syrian said all that he wanted to say the Imam went closer
to him and said with a smile, "May peace be with you.
- I think you have just come
to this town.
- If you need some food we can
provide you.
- If you may need anything we
can give you
- and if you need directions
we can give directions
- and if you may need a ride
we can provide one
- and if you need protection
we are ready to protect you."
The man after hearing all this began to cry and said, " I testify that you are
deputy of Allah on earth and Allah knows better who to entrust with Divine
message."
- Messenger of Allah , peace
be upon him and his progeny , said :" Choose to be a friend of the Prophet's
family , for whoever meets God while being a friend of our household , will
enter Paradise as a result of our intercession .
- O' people ! I heard my
grandfather , the messenger of God , say : " I am the city of knowledge and
Ali , peace be upon him , is the gate to the city . How can one enter a city
without going through its gate ?
- Some body asked Imam Hassan
, peace be upon him , : Why are we reluctant to die , why don't we like death
? "
- Because , " replied the Imam
, " You ruined your next world and developed this one ; naturally , you do not
like to be transferred from flourishing to decline .
- I swear by God , whoever
chooses to be our friend , no matter he is kept in captivity in such a remote
place as Deylam , our friendship will benefit him . Indeed , our friendship
removes Adam's offspring's' sins , as the wind scatters the leaves of trees .
- Most inhabitants of Kufah
wrote Mu'awiya letter to the effect that they support him and that should he
wish so , they would capture Imam Hassan , peace be upon him and bring him to
Mu'awiya . Than they plundered Imam Hassan's tent and injured him .
subsequently , Imam Hassan , peace be upon him , wrote
Mu'awiya the follwing letter : Indeed , this government and the Holy Prophet's
succession belongs to me , and the members of my family being forbidden to you
and the members of your family , that is what I personally heard from the
Apostle of God .
- I swear by God , If I could
find patient friends aware of their right, I would not yield to you and would
deny you your requests .
- If I could reduce the entire
world to one single mursel of food to feed a pure worshipper , I would feel
negligent of my duties to wards him .
- And if I could prevent an
infidel from enjoying worldly blessing , to the extent that his life should be
endangered for want of food and water , and then I hand him a glass of water ,
I would consider myself to be wasteful .
- To God , the highest -
ranking man is the one most familiar with people's rights . And that who is
humble towards his brothers in faith , will be put , by God , among the
veracious and shi'ites of the king of the
Believers Ali , peace be upon him .
- The Holy Prophet said : No
one is a true believer unless he does an evaluation of himself more seriously
than the selting of accounts between two partners or between a master and his
slave .
- The Messenger of God , may
the blessing of Allah be upon him said : " Making brothers in faith happy
causes one's sins to be forgiven .
- This world is a trouble -
some place of trail , and everything therein will decline , God has informed
us of its situation so that we could be thought a lesson there from .
- He has warned us against
punishment in order that , thereafter , we would not argue with him .
- Consequently , be pious in
this perishing world , and be interested in the internal , and be God fearing
openly and secretly
- Abandon what is
discretionary when it happens to be in contradiction to what is obligatory .
- Three things lead people to
their destruction . pride , greed and jealousy .
- Pride undermines faith , and
Satan was cursed and damned for the same .
- Greed is the enemy of one's
soul and Adam was expelled from paradise for the same reason ,
- and jealousy leads to evil
and misery . Cain killed his brother Abel only because of jealousy .
- Transfer your knowledge to
others and also learn from others to enhance your own knowledge and also
forever coming your own short comings .
- Only visit those from whom
you hope to be endowed or whose power you fear , or those who benefit . you
from their knowledge or those whom you hope would pray for you , or those who
are your own relatives .
- I have never seen a tyrant
more similar to the oppressed than a jealous person .
- Forget about whatever
worldly things you aimed to attain but couldn't.
- Any one whom God blesses
with an opportunity to pray , God will accept his prayers and to whom God
gives the chance to worship and be obedient ,
- for him He will open the
doors of acceptance , and any one who is blessed by Him to thank God ,
- He will open the doors of
abundance for increasing his blessings .
- This question was put
forward to Imam Mojtaba . Oh son of Prophet . How are you ? He said : I have a
God that controls me while the fire of Hell is in front of me .
- Death is summoning me and I
am surrounded by what I've to give an account of on the day of final Judgment
.
- I'm caught and entangled
between my actions and deeds .
- I can't get what I like and
I am unable to get away from what I despise , because all affairs are in the
hands of God .
- If He chooses He will
forgive me . Therefore which poor man is more needy than me ?
- Giving promises is like
aphids in generosity and philanthropy , the remedy is only in fulfillment and
accomplishment .
- Don't be too prompt in
punishing wrongdoings and errors; always leave some time for apology between
the perpetration of a mistake and punishment .

Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful *Excerpt from Kitab al-Irshad, submitted by
T. Zayn Al-Abidin , When the Commander of the Faithful, peace be on him, died,
al-Hassan addressed the people. He reminded them of his right (to authority).
The followers of his father pledged allegiance to him in terms of fighting
those he fought and making peace with those with whom he made peace (peace be
on them both). [Abu Mikhnaf Lut b. Yahya al-Azdi reported: Ash'ath b. Suwar
told me on the authority of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i and others, who said:] Al-Hassan
b. 'Ali, peace be on them, addressed the people towards dawn on the night in
which the Commander of the Faithful, peace be on him, died. He praised and
glorified God and blessed the Apostle of God, may God bless him and his
family. Then he said:
"There has died tonight a man who was the first among the early (Muslims) in
(good ) actions.
- Nor did any later (Muslims)
attain his level in (good) actions.
- He used to fight alongside
the Apostle of God, may Allah bless him and his family, and protect him with
his own life.
- The Apostle of God, may God
bless him and his family, used to send him forward with his standard while
Gabriel supported him on his right and Michael supported him on his left.
- He would not return until
God brought victory through his hands.
- He, peace be on him, has
died on this the night on which Jesus, son on Mary, was taken up (to Heaven),
on which Joshua, son of Nun, the testamentary trustee (wasi) of Moses, peace
be on him, died.
- He has left behind him no
gold and silver except seven hundred dirhams of his stipend ('ata), with which
he was intending to buy a servant for his family." Then tears overcame him and
he wept and the people wept with him.
- Then he continued: "I am the
(grand) son of the one who brought the good news.
- I am the (grand) son of the
Warner. I am the (grand) son of the man who, with God's permission, summoned
(the people) to God.
- I am the (grand) son of the
light which shone out (to the world).
- I am of the House, from whom
God has sent away abomination and whom God has purified thoroughly.
- I am of the House for whom
God has required love in his Book, when God, the Most High, said:
- "Say, I do not ask you for
any reward except love for (my) kin. Whoever earns good, will increase good
for himself." [42:23]
- The good is love for us, the
House." Then he sat down.
'Abd Allah b. al-'Abbas, may God have mercy on him, arose in front of him and
said: "People, this is the son of your Prophet, the testamentary trustee (wasi)
of your Imam. So pledge allegiance to him"
The people answered him saying, "No one is more loved by us nor has anyone
more right to succession (khilafa). "Reference: Shaykh al-Mufid (1981) Kitab
al-Irshad - The Book of Guidance into the Lives of the Twelve Imams, The

- Whoever regularly goes to
the mosque will enjoy one of the following eight benefits : a decisive verse ,
access to a helpful brother , new knowledge , an expected mercy , a word
leading him to the way of salvation or salvation or saving him from death ,
quitting sins out of public shame , and God-fearing .
- Indeed , the eyes with most
clear - sightedness are those penetrating good , the ears with sharpest
hearing are those benefiting from advice , and the purest hearts are those
without any doubts .
- A man asked Imam Hassan
peace be upon him , " I have a daughter , whom should she marry ? " A man",
answered the Imam , " of faith and God fearing for if he loves her,he will
respect her , and should he hate her won't do injustice to her".
- Indeed , this world offers
no everlasting blessing , nor one is immune to its damages and evils . The
world is a sham standing on the way to happiness , an unreliable support .
- O' Servants of God ! Take
advice from example , be admonished by the effects of ancients , stop
disobedience by remembering His blessings and benefit from pieces of advice .
- Indeed , God made Ramadan a
racing field of His people so that take precedence to obtain His consent by
obeying Him .
- I Swear by God , if the veil
is lifted , it will be revealed that benefactors are engaged in benefaction
and that malefactors in wickedness .
- O' My son Fraternize nobody
before knowing his destiny or origin .
- Thus , after having come to
know him and after having accepted to keep company with him , enter in to a
fraternity , provided you could pardon his blunders and help him in hardships
.
- When asked what fear is ,
Imam , peace be upon him , replied .Showing bravery towards friends and
running away from enemies .
- Infamy is easier than
entering the Hell .
- Foolishness is tending to
meanness and keeping company with the misguided .
- Imam , peace be upon him ,
described his benefactor brother as follows : I thought him to be the greatest
of all .
- The secret of his greatness
lay in his low opinion of this world .
- Ignorance had no control on
him .
- He did not take any action
unless he made sure that the action was useful .
- He never complained, nor ,
did he get angry and distressed .
- He was silent for the
greater part of his life time and when he spoke , he was the most eloquent of
all .
- He looked weak ; how ever ,
he fought as bravely as a lion .
- At the presence of scholars
, he preferred listening to speaking .
- He spoke whenever it was
necessary , never saying anything he did not act upon and acting upon things
he did not speak about .
- When faced with two
alternatives he was not sure which one was more pleasing to God , he
considered the alternative less pleasing to himself .
- He did not blame anybody for
doing something for which there existed an acceptable excuse .
- After burying his father,
Hassan (as) proceeded to the mosque and addressed the grieving ummah. He said:
“There has died tonight a man who was the first among the early Muslims in
good actions.
- Nor did any later Muslims
attain his level.
- He used to fight alongside
the Prophet, and protect him with his own life.
- The Prophet (pbuh) used to
send him with his standard while Gabriel supported him on his right and
Micheal on his left.
- He would not return until
Allah brought victory through his hands.
- He has died on this night on
which Jesus, son of Mary, was taken up to Heaven, on which Joshua, son of Nuh,
the testamentary trustee of Moses, died.
- He has left behind him no
gold and silver except 700 dirhams of his stipend, with which he was intending
to buy a servant for his family. “
- The people wept as he
continued: “I am the grandson of the one who brought the good news.
- I am the grandson of the
Warner.
- I am the grandson of the man
who, with Allah’s permission summoned the people to Allah.
- I am the grandson of the
light which shone out to the world.
- I am of the House, from whom
Allah has sent away abomination and whom He has purified thoroughly.
- I am of the House for whom
He has required love in his book when He said:
- Say: I do not ask you for
any reward except love for my kin. Whoever earns good, will increase good for
himself. The good is love for us, the ahlul bayt. (42.23)
- Imam Hassan (as) accepted
the caliphate and ruled justly for 6 months. People rushed forward to pledge
allegiance to him as a successor. When asked about politics the imam said:
“Politics means observing the rights of Allah and the rights of the living and
the rights of the dead.
- Rights of Allah are that you
should obey His orders, and avoid what He forbids.
- Rights of the living are
that you should observe your duty to your brothers, and not tarry in serving
your ummah.
- You should be faithful to
the one in authority among you as long as he is faithful to his ummah.
- You should speak up in his
face should he deviate from the right path.
- Rights of the dead are that
you should remember their good deeds and overlook their bad ones.
- They have a Lord who shall
ask them about whatever they did.”
- After signing the Peace
Treaty, some people were brazen enough to try to find fault with Imam Hassan
(as). He replied to them: “Am I not the Hujjat of the Almighty, being his
remembrance upon his creatures?
- Did not the Holy Prophet (pbuh)
of Islam (pbuh) say: “Hassan (as) and Hussina are two Imams, whether they are
standing or sitting?” If I had not agreed to this, all of the shia would have
been annihilated.”
- With this reply, Imam Hassan
(as) reached his objective: the discernment of truth over falsehood. Muawiya
(la) confirmed this. Shortly afterwards, he would not only breech the
conditions of the contract, but publicly announce: “By God, I have not fought
against you to make you pray, nor to fast, nor to make the pilgrimage, nor to
pay zakat.
- I fought you so that I might
have power over you and God has given that to me when you were reluctant to
obey Him.
- Indeed I have been requested
by Hassan (as) to give him things and I have given things to him. All of them
are now trampled under my foot and from now on, I will not fulfill any of
them.”
- When Muawiya (la) gloated
over what he had taken from Imam Ali (as) and his son, Imam Hassaan replied:
“O you who mention Ali, I am Al Hassan (as), and Ali (as) was my father.
- You are Muawiya (la) and our
father was Sakhr (Abu Sufyan).
- My mother was Fatima (as)
and your mother was Hind.
- My grand father was the
apostle of Allah and your grandfather was Harb.
- My grandmother was Khadija
and your grandmother ws Futayla.
- May Allah curse him who
tries to reduce our reputation and to diminish our nobility, who does evil
against our antiquity and yet who has been ahead of us in disbelief and
hypocrisy.
Rumors and a prophecy:
- The Holy Imam devoted
himself to prayers in such abundance, that he bore scars of prostration on his
limbs. He spent most of the nights in absorption and humiliation, shedding
tears and trembling. He went on the pilgrimage 25 times on foot. He had
worldly possessions and wealth at his disposal, but used it to improve the
condition of the poor, as he was charitable in nature. One day a man came to
him and said that poverty and bad luck were torturing him and asked Imam
Hassan (as) to save him from this cruel enemy. The imam gave him 5,000 dinars
to start a business and relieve himself of debt, poverty and reourcelessness.
Hassan (as) once set a servant free when she offered him a bouquet of flowers.
He kept company with poor and beggars, never making them feel inferior to him.
He was patient and had control over his emotions. Once a man from Syria saw
Imam Hassan (as) riding his horse and started abusing him. Imam Hassan (as)
greeted him cheerfully and asked for forgiveness, offered him transportation,
food, clothes, and to grant his rights and protect him. Feeling ashamed, the
man cried upon realizing that he was Allah’s heir on earth. He admitted
formerly resenting the Prophet (pbuh) and his family, but now seeing Imam
Hassan’s (as) true nature, repented and professed their love and obedience.

Janada bin umaiyyah says I visited Imam
Hassan bin Ali ibn e Abi Talib during the ailment which caused his death . I
said ' , Oh lord why do you get yourself treated ? He said , ' O Abdullah with
what may I treat the death ? I said (Indeed , we are for Allah & toward Him
shall we go back) then he turned to me & said ', By Allah , the Prophet of Allah
s.a.w got us committed that 12 Imams would be the owners of this matter
(Imamate) from the sons of Ali a.s & Fatima s.w.a . There is none of us but that
he would be poisoned or slain. And then he s.a.w admonished me.' He said , '
yes , get ready for your journey (towards resurrection day) & get your
provisions before your death arrival. And know it that you seek the world
(material sources ) & death is seeking you. Do not load the worry of the day
which has not yet come , upon your present day. And beware that you do not
achieve & attain a wealth above your energy but you are a trustee of it (wealth)
for an other person. And do know that there is account in it's lawful &
permitted , & in it's prohibited lies punishment & retribution , & in it's
paradox & doubt fuls there is reproof. So , suppose the world as if it is a dead
corpse (dirt). Take out of it which is sufficient for you . So if it is halal
(lawful & legal) you have adopted piety & asceticism. And if it (sustenance) is
(from) prohibited there would be no load (upon you) since you took out of it
just as you took out of a dead corpse. And if there is a reproof that reproof is
easy (soft one). And work for your resurrection day & here after as if you have
die tomorrow . And if you intend to achieve honour without a tribe & appalling

disgrace of committing sin forbidden by Allah , towards the honour of the
obedience of Allah .(BIHAR UL ANWAR , VOL 44 , P-138/139).

It has also been reported in the same book

Imam Hasan (a..s) said: Allah will make the one who puts on a
garment of fame in this world wear a garment of Fire in Hereafter.
290.
The best wealth is contentment and the worst
poverty is humility.
- One day Imam Hasan, (a.s.)
was busy eating when a dog came and stood in front of him, gazing at him. Imam
Hasan put a mouthful of food in his own mouth and then threw some in front of
the dog. The dog ate it, wagged his tail in thanks, barked, and again lifted
its head to gaze at Imam hasan.
Imam Hasan (a.s.) threw another mouthful of food in front of the dog A man who
was passing by came forward and said, " It's not right that this dog stands in
front of you and stops you from eating in peace With your permission I will
beat it and drive it away."
"No, no, don't do that," Imam Hasan told him. "Allah has created this animal
and Allah loves it. It is hungry and l am ashamed before Allah to eat His food
and His blessings and not give anything to this creature that is His creation.
After all, it is hungry and is looking at me."
- Imam Hassan (AS) martyred
after the cursed Mu'awiya asked his wife to poison him.
Based on this treacherous action, Imam (A.S) suffered heavy bleeding and the
color of his face changed and he said, "On several occasions , poison was
given to me, but I had never suffered such hardship as on this occasion."
sharh Nahjul Balagah ; vol 16 ; pg 49
Imam Hasan (AS) attained shahadat due to poison at the age of 47.Al - Kafi vol
I pg 461 & 462
- One day during his
childhood, he with his brother Hussain (AS) saw an Arab man performing
ablution. In as much as he didn't perform the ritual properly, they decided to
show him how it should be done. But in order that he might not be annoyed,
they suggested to him that they perform ablution, and the man judge which
ablution was correctly performed. The Arab man said: " Both your ablutions are
perfect and mine is wrong." He was amazed at their politeness and asked them
who they were and kissed their faces.
- Another problem that faced
Imam Hassan (AS) was a group named `Khavarij' in Kufa and among his own men'.
These men attacked Imam Hassan (AS) in order to assassinate him at the first
opportunity, but failed and only struck him on his thigh and the Imam fell ill
in bed. Under the circumstances, Muawiya proposed a peace treaty. Imam Hassan
(AS) addressed his people, thus:
"Muawiya has invited us to a peace treaty which is far from being just and
honorable. I am going to make you accept something you don't like. If you
don't fear death, our answer shall be negative and let our swords speak for
us. But if you choose to live longer, we shall accept his invitation to
peace."
- The People of Kufa cried
that they wanted to live longer and to avoid bloodshed among Muslims. Imam
(AS) yielded to public opinion, stepped down and signed the `Peace Treaty':
This `Peace Treaty' between Hassan (AS) son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) and
Muawiya son of Abu Sufyan on the strength of which, the caliphate shall be
entrusted to Muawiya in order for him to rule according to the Holy Book, the
Qur'an, and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) not entrust the caliphate to
anyone else but to let it be handled by the Council of Muslims and the people
in the Islamic countries of Syria, Iraq, Tahama and Hejaz .
After having signed the `Peace Treaty', Muawiya addressed the people, thus:
"I accept the clauses in the Treaty just for the sake of ending the hostility
and establishing amity among the people. Bearing in mind that all is with me."
Thus, the black autocratic rule of Ummayids over the Islamic world began.
296.
When Al-Hasan-bin-Ali(A.S.) was stabbed and
people mutinied, he conceded to Muawiya. Hence, his followers came to him and
said: Peace be upon you, disgracer of the believers!" He (A.S.) said: I am not
the disgracer of the believers. I am their consolidator. When I noticed that you
were weaker than them, I conceded so that you, as well as I, would remain among
them. This is the same reason that made the scholar crack the ship so that it
would be kept for its owners.
297.
O son of Annu'man, as I say something to one
of you, he relates it to me before others. This will make him deserve my curse
and disavowal.
298.
My father used to say: "Nothing is more
delightful that taqiyyah.
299.
It is the shelter of the faithful believers.
300.
Without taqiyyah, Allah would not have been
worshipped." Allah says in this regard: The believers must not establish
friendship with the unbelievers in preference to the faithful. Whoever does so
has nothing to hope for from Allah unless he does it out of fear or pious
dissimulation - taqiyyah. (Holy Qur'an 3:28)
301.
O son of Annu'man, beware of disputation,
because it destroys you. Beware of quarrelsomeness, because it takes you away
from Allah.
302.
Those who preceded you used to keep silence,
while you are learning how to speak.
303.
If one of them wanted to dedicate his efforts
to worship, he would have to learn keeping silent ten years before so.
304.
If he learned it adequately, he would go
worshipping.
305.
Otherwise, he would say: No, I am not fit
enough for so.
306.
Only he who keeps silent against obscenity
and tolerates harm under the ruling of the unjust authorities will be saved.
307.
These are the chaste, the pure, and the true
disciples.
308.
Moreover, they are the faithful believers.
309.
The most hated to me are the distributors of
the news, the gossiping, and those who envy their friends.
310.
They are not from me and I am not from them.
311.
My disciples are only those who submit to our
affairs, our tracks, and rest upon us in every matter.
312.
I swear by Allah, if you provide gold as much
as this earth for Allah's sake and then envy a believer, you will be ironed with
that gold after it will be hearted in Hell.
313.
O son of Annu'man, the divulger of our
secrets is more sinful than him who kills us with his sword.
314.
He is surely more sinful. He is surely more
sinful.
315.
O son of Annu'man, he whoever relates a
narrative to us is murdering us intentionally, not unintentionally.
316.
O son of Annu'man, the Shaitan is still
attaching to us -the prophet's family - those who are neither with us nor with
our religion.
317.
When such an individual is raised and
regarded by people, the Shaitan will order him to fabricate lies against us.
318.
Whenever such an individual goes, another
will come forth.
319.
O son of Annu'man, he who says, 'I do not
know,' if he does not find the answer of a question is behaving fairly to
knowledge.
320.
The faithful believers who bear malice in a
situation should get rid of that malice as soon as that situation ends.
321.
O son of Annu'man, the scholar cannot tell
you of everything he knows, because he is Allah's secret that He revealed to
Gabriel the angel.
322.
Gabriel revealed it to Muhammad (S.A.W.), and
he revealed to Ali(A.S.) who revealed it to Al-Hasan (A.S.).
323.
Al-Hasan revealed to al-Hussein (A.S.) who
revealed to Ali (A.S.). Ali (A.S.) revealed it to Muhammad (A.S.) who revealed
it to someone.
324.
Do not be hasty. This issue was about to be
come forth three times, but it was postponed because you declared it publicly.
Your enemies are more acquainted with your secrets.
325.
O son of Annu'man, Keep yourself safe. You
have disobeyed me.
326.
Do not divulge my secrets. Al-Mughira-bin-Saeed
forged lies against my father and divulged his secrets; therefore, Allah caused
him to suffer the heat of iron.
327.
Likewise, Abul-Khattab forged lies against me
and divulged my secrets; therefore, Allah caused him to suffer the heat of iron,
For those who conceal our affairs, Allah will adorn them with our affair in this
world and the world to come, give them their shares, and guard them against the
heat of iron and the narrow detention.
328.
Once, the Israelis were inflicted with such a
harsh famine that their animals and children perished. Hence, Moses the prophet
(A.S.) supplicated to Allah to save them.
329.
Allah said: O Moses, they have made public
fornication and usury, constructed the churches, and wasted the alms,-giving."
330.
Moses said: O Lord, be merciful to them out
of your compassion. They do not understand."
331.
Thus, Allah told Moses that He would send
rainfall on them and test them for forty days.
332.
But they publicized this matter; hence, Allah
ceased rainfall for forty years.
333.
In the same way, as your issue was about to
come forth, you publicized the matter in your sessions.
334.
O son of Annu'man, what is your business with
people? Leave them alone and do not call anyone to this matter.
335.
I Swear by Allah, if the inhabitants of the
heavens and the earth support each other on deviating a servant whom Allah wants
to guide, they will not be able to do it.
336.
Let people alone and do not say this is my
brother, uncle, or neighbor.
337.
When Allah the Glorified wants the good of
somebody, He will make his soul so fertile that he accepts any good matter and
refuse any evil.
338.
Then Allah will strike his heart with a word
that corrects his matter totally.
339.
O son of Annu'man, if you want your friend to
keep your friendship, you should not joke or dispute with him, show him pride,
or mistreat him.
340.
Do not inform your friend of Allah of your
secrets except those which will not harm you if your enemy knows them, because
it is possible that your friend becomes your enemy someday.
341.
O son of Annu'man, a servant will nor be a
faithful believer before he learns three characters; one from Allah, one from
His messenger, and one from the Imam.
342.
The character that he should learn from Allah
is the concealment of secrets. Allah the Glorified says: He knows the unseen and
He does not allow anyone to know His secrets... (Holy Qur'an 72:26)
343.
The character that he should learn from the
Prophet (S.A.W.) is that he should treat people courteously.
344.
The character that he should learn from the
Imam (A.S.) is to be steadfast against situations of misfortune and crises until
relief comes about.
345.
O son of Annu'man, eloquence is neither the
sharpness of the tongue nor the much speaking. It is targeting the meaning and
going for the evidence.
346.
O son of Annu'man, he whoever sits with those
who revile at Allah's disciples is disobeying Allah.
347.
He whoever suppresses his rage for our sake
since he cannot show it will be with us on the Highest Peak.
348.
Allah will cause to suffer the heat of iron
and the narrow detention those who begin their days with divulging our secrets.
349.
O son of Annu'man, do not seek knowledge for
showing off, pride, and disputation.
350.
Do not leave it for the desire of ignorance,
belittlement of knowledge, and feeling shy of people.
351.
The protected knowledge is the like of a
covered torch.
352.
O son of Annu'man, when Allah the Glorified
wants to do good to a servant, He situates a white mark in his heart.
353.
Hence, the heart will be in search of the
right. Then he will be as hasty as a bird going back to its nest for achieving
your affair.
354.
O son of Annu'man, Allah causes the adoration
to us-the Prophet's family-to descend from the heavens. It is situated in
warehouses, like those of gold and silver, under the Divine Throne. He descends
it in limited quantities and gives it to the best of His creatures only. It is
in a cloud similar to that of rain. When Allah wants to give it exclusively to
whom He loves, he permits that cloud to pour. It then pours, like rainfall, on
the fetuses in their mothers' wombs. Reference:Tuhaf al-Uqool , From:

in God is relaxed and secure where as his enemy is fearful and friendless .
- Be careful with God by
frequently remembering Him , and be fearful of God by being pious , and
approach God through obedience , for indeed He is near and responsive .
- The greatness of those who
came to know his greatness lies in their modesty .
- The dignity of those who
came to know His glory lies in their humbleness .
- The security of those who
came to know His power lies in their submission to God .
- You should know that God has
not created you for no reason and that has not left you to your own .
- He has determined your life

- In quest , do not take
victory for granted , do not trust predestination like the yielding , for it
is a tradition to be in quest of sustenance .
- Thus , moderation in search
of one's livelihood comes from chastity which is not on the way of sustenance
- By the same token , avarice
does not increase sustenance .
- In deed , sustenance has
been predestined and avarice brings about sins .
- One is free as long as has

- In the Name of Allah, the
Compassionate, the Merciful
Once on an Eid al-Fitr, Imam Hassan (PBUH) saw a man who had occupied his time
with laughter and useless entertainment. At that Imam Hassan (PBUH) turned to
his companions and said: "Allah placed the holy month of Ramadan for people so
that they compete with each other in worship and obedience.
- In this competition, some
excel, achieve unlimited blessings of Allah, and (therefore) win the
competition.
- Whereas, others fall back,
lose, and obtain nothing but loss.
- It is striking that in such
a day-- in which the righteous and the hard workers will receive great rewards
and the culpable and one's who did not try their best will see loss,-- (that
they) keep themselves busy with entertainment."
- One of the rituals done in
this festival is Salat al-Eid. In addition to the fact that prayer (Salat) is
a sign of Allah's mercy and munificence, each Salat can strengthen the ties
one has with Allah (SWT). Certain prayers allow one to gain specific blessings
from Allah (SWT). Hence, one who has the chance to perform such prayers may
reach to his/her own needs in addition to forgiveness and special gifts from
the almighty Allah. The prayer of Eid al-Fitr belongs to this category of
prayers. On such an important Eid, one should be hopeful of Allah's mercy and
forgiveness, rather than being hopeless because of his sins. Moreover, despite
disgrace of any individual as a consequence of sins, one should seek Allah's
compassion through His Prophet, Imams (PBUT) and those who attained high
ranks. Indeed, Allah (SWT) will not turn His servants down and everyone will
be able to gain profit.
Thus, one should perform the prayer with special attention and a hopeful heart
toward Allah's mercy and kindness. (Reference: Al-Muraqibat by Haj Mirza Jawad

- Imam Hasan (a.s.) was
standing amid the masses calling them to rally around the truth. In one of his
speeches he said: "Thanks be to Allah. There is no god other than He.
- He has no partner. I praise
Him and He is Praiseworthy.
- Allah gave you great favors
and showered you with His graces which are beyond number.
- One cannot possibly thank
Him for them.
- Neither a statement or
saying can express them.
- We are angry only on behalf
of Allah.
- He favored us with what
cannot be given by anyone but Him.
- We should, therefore, thank
Him for His bounties, tribulations and favors.
- Our praise should ascend to
Allah, carrying our satisfaction to Him.
- It should be truthful. Our
praise has to be so true that Allah believes us.
- It has to make us entitled
to receive more of his bounties.
- Our praise should increase
rather than decrease Allah's favors.
- No group of people gather
around some matter without making it firmer, and their beliefs solid.
- So mobilize yourselves for
the fight against your enemy, Mu'awiyah, and his soldiers, because he has
advanced against you.
- And do not discourage one
another, for discouragement cuts asunder the heartstrings.
- Advancing under the
spearheads is a sign of bravery and piety, for no people had ever observed
jihad without the lifting of malaise from among them by Allah.
- He would spare them the
tribulations of humility, and guide them to the hallmarks of
denomination..."(17)
- The Commander of the
Faithful, Imam Ali bin Abi-Talib (a.s.), had warned the people against the
arbitration during the Battle of Siffin. He knew it was a trick. After the
charade of arbitration was over--and it ended with Abu-Musa al-Ash'ari's
failing Imam Ali (a.s.)--the camp of Imam Ali (a.s.) was thrown into
confusion. Chaos prevailed, and each group of people began to disassociate
themselves from the other. They started reviling each other. Imam Ali (a.s.)
wanted to explain to the people the situation as it was, and to show that the
arbitration was invalid because it was not based on truth and logic. He
assigned this task to his son Abu-Muhammad Hasan (a.s.).
"Stand up, son, and talk about these two men: Abdullah bin Qais, (18) and Amru
bin al-Aas," Imam Ali (a.s.) told his son. Imam Hasan (a.s.) stood and
addressed the people, telling them the real dimensions of the situation. He
said: "O people! You have talked too much about these two men. They were only
chosen to judge according to the Book and in the light of its guidance.
- But, they judged according
to their whims and not the Book.
- This being true, their
verdict cannot be called a judgment.
- Rather, it was an opinion
forced upon them.
- Abdullah bin Qais erred when
he named Abdullah bin Umar as the caliph. He made mistakes concerning three
points: First, he disagreed with his father who did not rate him as qualified
for caliphate, nor did he appoint him as a member of the Shura (consultative
group).
- Secondly, he did not consult
him on the matter. And thirdly, neither the immigrants nor the ansar (helpers)
rallied around him.
- These are those who appoint
the ruler and establish his reign over the people.
- As for arbitration, the
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) himself had chosen Sa'd bin Ma'ath for this. And
he did judge with what pleases Allah.
- Undoubtedly, if he had
deviated, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) would not have approved of him".(19)
- The second part or stage of
the role of Imam Hasan (a.s.) in the life of the Muslims commenced when his
father appointed him as the next Imam. In the wake of the cruel attempt on his
life by Abdul-Rahman bin Muljim and his cohorts the dying Imam (a.s.) said his
last will to his son, Hasan (a.s.):
"...my son, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) ordered me to inform you of my
last will, and hand over my books and weapons to you, exactly as he told me
his last will and gave me his books and weapons. He ordered me to order you to
give them to your brother, Hussein, when death approaches you..."
Then he turned to his son, Hussein, and said:
"And the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) ordered you to hand them to this son of
yours."
- Thereupon, he took hold of
the hand of Ali bin Hussein (a.s.) and said to him:
"And the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) ordered you to give them to your son,
Muhammad bin Ali. Remember, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) and me to
him."(20)
- The grandson of the
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.), Imam Hasan (a.s.), stood amid this multitude,
promulgating the first of his communiqués, after the departure of his great
leader. He said: "...this night, a man has died whom the first Muslims did not
outrun with good deeds, nor did the last ones catch up with him in pleasing
acts.
- He used to fight by the side
of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.), risking his own life for the sake of the
Prophet's.
- The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.)
would send him as his standard-bearer. Jibra'il would protect him by fighting
on his right, and Mika'il on his left.
- He would not return from the
battlefield until Allah had given him victory.
- He died in this night, on
which Isa bin Maryam (a.s.) ascended to heaven, and Yusha' bin Noon, the
trustee of Musa (a.s.), passed away. He has left no dirhams or dinars besides
the 700 Dirhams which were left over from his pay."
- At this point Imam Hasan (a.s.)
halted his speech for his tears choaked him.
- The image of the great
departing man, with his eternal deeds and stances, loomed before his eyes. The
Muslims could not help crying bitterly with him. Then he resumed his speech.
- He said: "O people! Who has
recognized me, that is that. Who has not, let him know that I am Hasan bin
Ali. I am the son of the Holy Prophet. I am the son of the Trustee.
- I am the son of the bearer
of the good news, and the warner.
- I am the son of the Caller
to Allah by His permission.
- I am the son of the bright
lamp. I am from the house at which Jibra'il used to descend to us, and ascend
from us, and from the Ahlul-Bait whom Allah kept away from uncleanness and
totally purified them.
- I am from a household whose
love Allah made an obligation on every Muslim. Allah, the Blessed and the Most
High, said to His Prophet:
- ‘...say. I do not ask of you
any reward for it but love for my near relatives;...’Holy Qur'an (42:23)
Imam Hasan (a.s.) concluded his speech by saying, 'Doing a good deed means
loving us, the Ahlul-Bait...'"
- Imam Hasan's (a.s.) plans of
solidifying the government sys tem, and establishing it on a firm ground, were
soon effective in unearthing the plots of the Umayyads. In the wake of that,
Imam Hasan (a.s.) sent a letter to Mu'awiyah warning him, and threatening him
with war:
"...Mind you. You have sent stealthily men to me. It is as if you like to go
to war.
- I have no doubt it. Then
anticipate it, Allah willing. I have heard that you rejoiced about what the
wise men do not gloat over.
- Your parable is like the one
of whom the poet says: "I and the one who had died are like someone who goes
home, goes to sleep, to wake up the following day.
- So, tell him who remains
behind that who departs: 'Prepare for something like this. You, too, will be
something of the past.’"
- Imam Hasan (a.s.) sent a
short letter which displays his insistence and determination:
"Mind you, your letter has arrived. You mention in it what you mention and I
did not answer you...
- I take refuge with Allah
from that. Follow the right, you will know that I am its follower.
- I will be a sinner if I tell
a lie. And peace be upon you."
- That was the last letter.
The situation went from bad to worst. War was declared between the two
parties.
Mu'awiyah was the first to declare the state of war. He began to advance his
armies towards Iraq.
- The Muslims communicated the
news of Mu'awiyah's move to one another. Imam Hasan (a.s.) took due measures
to face the coming enemy.
- Imam Hasan (a.s.) announced,
in a statement, the next move. He called the ummah to mobilize and prepare to
war: "Mind you, Allah ordained jihad on His creatures, and made it a duty
which they receive reluctantly.
- Then He said to the
combatants: 'Be patient, Allah is certainly with the patient.'
- You, O people, will not win
what you love without enduring what you do not like.
- Go out, may Allah have mercy
on you, to your camp at al-Nukhailah, till we think and you think, and see and
you see."
- Imam Hasan (a.s.) praised
them for their true stance, and addressed them in these words: "You are
truthful, may Allah have mercy on you.
- I still know of your true
intention and loyalty, your approval and true love. May Allah reward you the
best of rewards."
- The committed people
hastened to al-Nukhailah and encamped there, in obedience to their Imam (a.s.).
Imam Hasan (a.s.), afterwards, followed them with an army, estimated by some
historians, at 4,000 men.The rest of the people were to join him.
- Imam Hasan (a.s.) hoped that
the people would support the right cause and so come to defend Islam.
- But their delay in joining
him made Imam Hasan (a.s.) return once again to his capital, Kufah, to egg on
the people to join him.
- He marched on, leading a
tremendous army, which was paradoxically in low spirit, eaten away by weakness
and disharmony.
- He arrived in al-Nukhailah,
where he organized his army, and set plans for the commanders of the
divisions.
- From there, he headed for
Dair Abdul-Rahman. There he decided to send a military force ahead of his
army. He elected his cousin Ubaidullah bin al-Abbas as its commander.
- He said to him: "...Cousin!
I am sending with you twelve thousand men, among whom there are famous
horsemen of the Arabs, and the Quranic reciters of Kufah. Each one of them is
equal to one battalion in courage.
- March with them, be kind to
them, look at them with a smiling face, be humble to them, and consult them.
They are the remaining men whom the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) trusted.
Lead them along the bank of Euphrates.
- Then march till you come
face to face with the army of Mu'awiyah. If you meet him, keep him there till
I join you.
- I will go, following you
closely behind. Keep me informed of your moves on a daily basis.
- Consult these two men, Qais
bin S'ad and Sa'eed bin Qais. If you meet Mu'awiyah, refrain from engaging him
in battle till he fights you.
- Should he do so, then fight
him. If you are injured or killed, Qais bin S'ad will succeed you as the
commander of the army, and if he is injured or killed, Sa'eed bin Qais will
succeed him."
- Thus Imam Hasan's answer to
Hijr ibn Uday Al-Kindi came "I found people wishing to reconcile and and
disliked war.
- I did not want to go through
something which they disliked.
- I reconciled especially for
the sake of our followers to be spared from being killed.
- However, I have only
postponed the war, and God has a surprise every day".
- A blessing is trial, if
gratitude is shown for it, it becomes a blessing, and if you show ingratitude
for it then it becomes a wrath.
- Goodness that is free of any
wickedness is, gratitude for the blessings, and patience during misfortune.
- The most discerning eye is
the one that penetrates (views) into the blessings and the most auditory ear
is the one heeds reminding and benefits from it.
- And the most pure of hearts
is the one purified from doubt.
- Opportunities pass away
swiftly, and take longer to return
- Do not struggle hard like a
successful (searcher) of material and do not depend upon destiny like those
who surrender to it. (Neither greed nor laziness) Because seeking the Grace
(of Allah) is Sunnah and not being greedy in seeking sustenance is modesty.
And modesty is not the cause for the repulsion of sustenance, nor does greed
attract grace, because sustenance is (already) apportioned, and being greedy
is being sinful.
- Jest eats away one’s
dignity, and the one remaining silent increases in dignity.
- Befriend people in the same
manner you would like them to befriend you.
470.
Imam Hassan-ibn-Ali (A.S.) said: " I wonder
about the person who contemplates about his nutrition but he does not consider
(the food of) his intellect. Thus, he avoids of what hurts him in his stomach
but he lets his mind to be filled with what destroys him." Safinat-ul-Bihar,
vol. 2, p. 84
471.
The following incident is quoted in the book
`Kashful Ghumma':
A Syrian came to Madinah. He saw a handsome man astride a good camel. Upon
enquiry he learnt that it was Imam Hasan ibn Ali (a.s.).
This man from Syria stepped forward in anger and said; "Are you the son of Ali
ibn Abi Talib ?"
"Yes, I am the son of Ali."
He said, "You are the son of a person who was a mushrik (polytheist)". And he
continued his foul utterances till he got tired of it. Imam Hasan (a.s.)
remained silent. At last the man felt ashamed.
472.
The Imam (a.s.) seeing his remorse said: "You
look like a traveler, are you from Syria ?"
"Yes sir", he replied.
473.
Imam Hasan (a.s.) said: "If you need a place
to stay, we shall provide it. If you need money we would give it you. If you
have any other problem, we shall help you."
Not only was the Syrian ashamed but was also rendered speechless by such an
excellent behavior.
474.
The following are his own words: "After I had
the good fortune of enjoying the hospitality of Imam Hasan Ibne Ali (a.s.), I
found his personality more likeable than that of any other person in the world."
475.
Hazrat Imam Al-Hasan a.s and Hazrat Imam al-Husayn
(a.s.), were present. Al- Husayn (a.s.), rose to reply but al-Hasan (a.s.), took
him by the hand and made him sit down. Then he, himself, (al-Hasan) arose and
spoke: O you who mention Ali, I am al-Hasan and Ali was my father.
476.
You are Muawiya and your father was Sakhr
(Abu Sufyan).
477.
My mother was Fatima and your mother was
Hind.
478.
My grand father was the Apostle of Allah and
your grandfather was Harb.
479.
My grandmother was Khadija and your
grandmother was Futayla.
480.
May Allah curse him who tries to reduce our
reputation and to diminish our nobility, who does evil against our antiquity and
yet who has been ahead of us in unbelief and hypocrisy.
Groups of the people in the mosque shouted out: "Aameen, Aameen"
481.
Hazrat Imam Hasan (a.s.), addressed the
people towards dawn on the night in which Hazrat Ali (a.s.) was Martyred. He
praised and glorified Allah and blessed His Apostle. Then he said: There has
died tonight a man, who was the first among the early (Muslims) in (good)
actions.
482.
Nor did any later (Muslims) attain his level
in (good) actions.
483.
He used to fight alongside the Apostle of
Allah, and protect him with his own life.
484.
The Apostle of Allah, used to send him
forward with his standard while Gabriel supported him on his right and Mikhail
supported him on his left.
485.
He would not return until Allah brought
victory through his hands. He, has died on this the night on
which Jesus, son of Mary, was taken up (to Heaven), on which Joshua, son of Nuh,
the testamentary trustee (wasi) of Moses, died.
486.
He has left behind him no gold and silver
except seven hundred dirhams of his stipend (ata'), with which he was intending
to buy a servant for his family.
Then tears overcame him and he wept and the people wept with him.
487.
Then Imam Hasan (a.s.), wrote to Mua'wiya:
You sent men to use deception and to carry out assassinations and you sent out
spies as if you want to meet (in battle). That is something which will soon
happen so wait for it, if Allah wills.
488.
I have learnt that you have become haughty
in a way that no wise man would become haughty. In that you are just as al-Awwal
described:
489.
Say to him who desires the contrary of the
one who has died:
490.
Prepare for another like him, as if (from the
same) root.
491.
I and the one among us who has died are like
the one who goes in the evening so that (the other) may come in the morning.
Muawiya replied to him with his letter, which there is no need to mention.
Muawiya set off towards Iraq. When he reached the bridge of Manbij, Imam Hasan (a.s.),
reacted. He sent Hujr ibne Adi to order the leaders of Amman to set out and to
call the people together for war.
492.
They were slow to (answer) him and then they
came forward. (Imam Hasan) had a mixed band of men: some of them belonged to his
Sh'ia and to his father's: some of them were members of the Muhakimma (i.e.
Kharijites) who were influenced by (the desire of) fighting Muawiya with every
means (possible); some of them were men who loved discord and were anxious for
booty; some of them were doubters; others were tribal supporters who followed
the leaders of their tribes without reference to religion.
He set off until he came to Hammam Umar, then he went on to Dayr Kab. He stopped
at Sabat, just before the bridge and spent the night there. In the morning, he (a.s.)
wanted to test his followers and make their situation clear with regard to
obedience to him, so that in that way he might be able to distinguish his
friends from his enemies and be in a clear mind (about his position) to meet
Mu'awiya and the Syrians. He ordered the call to be made:
The prayer is a general one (which all should attend) (al-salat jamia).
They gathered and he went up on the pulpit and addressed them. He said:
Praise belongs to Allah whenever a man praises Him.
493.
I testify that there is no god but Allah

not reject my judgment.

502.
The people began to look at one another and
asked each other, "What do you think he intends by what he has just said?
"We think that he intends to make peace with Muawiya and hand over the authority
to him" they answered.
"By Allah the man has become an unbeliever, they declared and they rushed
towards his tent.
503.
They plundered him to the extent that they
even took his prayer mat from under him. Then Abd al- Rahman ibne Abd Allah ibne
Ja'al al-Azdi set on him and stripped his silk cloak from his shoulder. He
remained sitting, still girt with his sword but without his cloak. He called for
his horse and mounted it. Groups of his close associates and his Shia surrounded
him and kept those who wanted (to attack) him away from him. He said: Summon
(the tribes of) Rabia and Hamdan to me.
They were summoned to him and they surrounded him and defended him, from the
people. A mixed group of others went with him (as well). When he was passing
through the narrow pass of Sabat, a man of Banu Asad called al-Jarrah ibne Sinan
caught hold of the reins of his mule. He had an axe in his hand. He cried:
Allahu Akbar! You have become a polytheist, Hasan, just like your father became
a polytheist before.
Then he stabbed him in the thigh. It penetrated right through to the bone. He
seized (al-Hasan) by the neck and they both fell to the ground. A man from al-Hasan's
Shi'a called Abd Allah ibne Khatal al- Tai; pulled the axe away from his hand
and struck him with it in the stomach. Another man called Zubyan ibne Umara
attacked him, struck him upon the nose and killed him. Another man who had been
with (al-Jarrah) was caught and killed.
504.
Imam Hasan (a.s.), was carried on a stretcher
to al-Mada'in where he was lodged with Sa'd ibne Masud al-Thaqafi. The latter
was the governor of (Ali), the commander of the faithful, peace be on him, there
and al-Hasan had confirmed him in that position.
505.
Imam Hasan (a.s.), was distracted by his own
(discomfort) and with treating his wound. (In the meantime) a group of the
tribal leaders wrote secretly to Mu'awiya offering to accept his authority (lit.
to listen and obey). They urged him to come to them and they guaranteed to hand
over Imam Hasan (a.s.), when they got to his camp, or to kill him treacherously.
506.
Imam Hasan (a.s.), learnt of that when a
letter came to him from Qays ibne Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him. He had
sent Qays with Ubayd Allah ibne Abbas (to go on ahead) when he had set out from
Kufa to meet Muawiya and to drive him out of Iraq, and make himself a commander
of a unified people (jama'a).
507.
He had said to Ubayd Allah: If you are struck
down, then the commander will be Qays ibne Sa'd.
Qays ibne Sad's letter arrived informing him that they had stopped Muawiya at a
village called al-Habubiyya opposite Maskan. Then Muawiya had sent to Ubayd
Allah ibne Abbas, urging him to come to him and offering him a million dirhams,
half of which he would give him immediately, and the other half on his entry
into Kufa. Ubayd Allah had slipped away in the night with his close associates
to (join) Muawiya's camp. In the morning the people found their leader missing.
Qays ibne Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, said the prayer with them and
took charge of their affairs.

things: Arrogance, Greed and envy. Arrogance causes destruction of the religion

wickedness, and because of it Qabil killed Habil.

watched my mother, Fatima, pray all night long. She kept making Ruku' and
prostrating until dawn. I heard her supplicate for the believers by name; but
she did not supplicate for herself, so I asked: `Mother, why don't you
supplicate for yourself as you supplicate for others?' She answered: `Son!
Prefer your neighbor over yourself. "'

your father’s seat,’ and he placed him in his lap and wept’. Ali said ‘By Allah
this was not from my command’.

Imam Hasan (AS) tells us the following salient points:
That Moawiya should rule strictly according to the Holy QurAan and the Sunna of
the Prophet.
That Moawiya should not appoint or nominate anyone to the Khilafat after him but
that the choice should be left to the Muslims.
That the people should be left in peace, wherever they are in the land of God.

brother Imam Hussain or any of the Ahlubayt. (AS)
This agreement concluded, Imam Hasan (AS) went to Kufa, shortly followed by
Moawiya who came their to take the allegiance of the people. In a speech
delivered in front of Moawaiya, Imam Hasan (AS) explained the situation
clearly.:

followed (referring to himself). Indeed this (the Khilafat) is nothing but a
