The famous exegist Suyuti in his renowned commentary Our al-Manthur' cites Tabarani's narration from Umm Salama that the Prophet once told his beloved daughter Fatima to call her husband Ali and their two sons Hasan and Husain. When they came, the Prophet covered them with a Fadak (a place near Madinah) cloak and puffing his hand on them, said: 0 Allah! these are the ahl of Muhammad (another version says aal i.e. family), so, shower your blessings and favours on aal Muhammad as you showered them on aal Abraham; You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious.. Umm Salama said that she raised the cloak to join them, but the Prophet pulled it out of her hand and said: You are (also) on the right'.
Holy Our'an (33:33)
Another narration from Umm Salama says that once the Prophet was in her
house lying on a mattress, covered with a cloak from Khaibar when his
beloved daughter Fatima (a.s.) entered with a dish called aI-Khazira (a
kind of food). The Prophet asked her to call her husband (Ali) and her two
sons, Hasan and Husain. She called them and as they all sat together to
eat, Allah revealed the following verse to the Prophet.
"...Allah desires to keep
away uncleanness from you, o' people of the House and make you pure as
pure can be . Holy Qur'an
(33:33)
Upon this the Prophet covered them all with his cloak and lifting his
hands towards the sky said: "0
Allah! this is my family and the nearest of my kin, keep away from them
uncleanness and keep them pure as pure can be'.
On many an occasion the Prophet explained the meaning of this verse to
the Muslims and drew their attention to its significance. Abi Sa'id Khidri
quotes the Prophet as saying:
"This verse was revealed
concerning five persons): Myself, All, Fatima, Hasan and Husain. "…Allah
desires to keep away uncleanness from you, people of the House and make
you pure as pure can be."

During the last moments of the Prophet's life on Earth, Imam Ali (AS) was with him. The Prophet (SAW) had ordered that his "brother and companion" be called for him. The Prophet (SAW) was weakened by fever and he was passing out (fainting) and waking up. A'isha said call my father. When Abu Bakr came, the Prophet turned his face away from him and repeated his request "call my brother and companion". Hafsa said call my father. When Umar came, the Prophet (SAW) again turned his face away from him and repeated his request for the third time. Umm Salama (may God be pleased with her) then told them "call Ali for the Prophet does not mean anybody else"!
When Imam Ali (AS) came, the Prophet (SAW) summoned him to bend down and sit close to him so that he can speak with him privately. A while later the Prophet (SAW) told him "put my head on your lap for the order of God (for my death) has come. When my soul departs, take it with your hands and rub your face with it...." Later on people asked Imam Ali (AS) "O Abul Hassan, what did the Prophet (SAW) entrust to you before his death when he was talking to you privately"? Imam Ali (SA) said "the Prophet has taught me a thousand doors of knowledge and each door opened for me another thousand doors"! So in another words, in the span of a few minutes only the Prophet (SAW) taught Imam Ali (AS) one million "doors" of knowledge! Again the metaphor here is that the word "doors" stands for books of knowledge or chapters of knowledge! The prophet of God (SAW) has said: "I am the City of Knowledge and Ali is its Gate. If you want to get (close) to me you have to come through the Gate (Ali)"

Thus, it is not necessary to be a prophet to see and hear. Many could do so; and so could Ali (as). He was ten years old when he accompanied the Prophet (saw) to the temple and the cave of Hirra, and when revelation came to Muhammad (saw) for the first time which carried him into ecstasy, Ali, too, could hear the sounds from the occult. He says: "I told the Prophet that when revelation came I could hear the groans of Satan." The Prophet said: "O Ali, you can hear what I hear, and see what I see, even though you are not a prophet."

If on the other hand Imam Ali (AS) says "No, ya Rassul Allah, this is one of

Behold! And he who dies with the love of the family of Muhammad, for him there will open two gates in his grave toward the Paradise.

And verily he who dies with the love of the family of Muhammad, has died on Sunnah.
And no doubt! The one who dies with the HATE of the family of Muhammad, will arrive in the day of judgment printed on his forehead he is desperate from the Mercy of Allah.

The people around him raised their heads and cast inquisitive glances at the Prophet (s.a.w) and at one another. Abu Bakr and Umar were there. Abu Bakr inquired if he was that person and the Prophet (s.a.w) replied in the negative. Then Umar inquired if he was that person and the Prophet (s.a.w), replied "No. He is the one who is repairing my shoes (i.e., Ali)."

You know what my relations with the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) were. From the very beginning of my life, he loved me and I loved him. He took me in his lap when I was a baby and thence I was always with him. He often kept me embraced to his heart. He used to lay me next to him. We used to be so close to each other that I felt the warmth of his body and smelled the fragrance of his odor. When I was a baby, he fed me with his hands, often chewing hard bits for me. He never found me lying nor weak and wavering. From the time of his (the Prophet (s.a.w.) infancy, Allah had appointed the greatest of His angels to always be with him, and His Arch Angel was leading him towards exemplary qualities and high moral values, and I followed him (s.a.w.) step by step as a baby camel follows its mother. Daily he used to place before me a fresh standard of efficiency and used to order me . to follow it. Every year he used to stay in a grotto of the Hara' for some time, and nobody used to be with him but I. None could then see or hear him but I. During those days Islam was the religion of only the Prophet and his wife, Khadijah. I was the third of the trio. Nobody else in this world had accepted Islam. Even then I used to see the divine light of revelation and prophet hood and smell the heavenly fragrance of prophet hood."

People asked Hazrat: who is your brother? he replied: 'Ali'. again he was asked: who is your son? he replied: 'Mahdi'
'I am the chief of the Prophets and Ali the chief of legatees. verily the legatees after me are twelve in number. the first of them is Ali and the last is Mahdi.'
He turned to Ali again and said "Dear Ali! Guide me in this matter". Ali replied: "There is no way out, except that you should go into the mosque and proclaim security for the Muslims". He said: "If I do so, will it be of any use?" Ali replied: "Not much, but I can't think of anything else at present".
Omar said: "A man like Ali is entitled to be proud. By God, without his sword the pillar of Islam could not have been erected. He is the highest magistrate in the nation, its earliest Muslim, and its most honorable."
Omar told Ibn Abbas the following: "There were high words from the Messenger of God (concerning Ali). But those words did not constitute a clear evidence for his leadership, nor did they eliminate all excuses (for those who did not side with him). The Messenger was trying to give Ali the leadership. He wanted to record his name when he was in his ailment, but I prevented him from doing that, for the interest of Islam. By the Lord of the Ka-abah, Quraish will never rally around him. Abu Sufyan, who was aware of the truthfulness, uprightness and purity of Ali, went to the mosque and put his suggestion into practice. He then left the mosque and proceeded to Makkah. In connection with the report which he gave to the chiefs of Quraysh about his performance at Madina, he also mentioned the advice given by Ali and said: "As suggested by Ali, I went into the mosque and proclaimed security for the Muslims".
Those present said to him: "Ali's suggestion was nothing more than a jest because the Prophet didn't pay any heed to your providing security to the Muslims and a one-sided declaration is useless". Then they held more meetings to find out some other means to pacify the Muslims.
Ali said: "By Allah! Our Prophet never tells a lie. You must surrender the letter, or else we shall recover it from you by all possible means".
Ali, the Commander of the Faithful, who was acquainted with the temperament of the Prophet and the method of arousing his sentiments, said to the two persons: "Go and sit before the Prophet and utter the same sentence which the brothers of Joseph uttered while offering apology".
At this moment the Prophet pronounced Takbir loudly and then added: "I thank Allah for His having perfected His religion and for having completed His favour and for His having been pleased with the mastership and succession of Ali after me".
Then the Prophet stepped down from the platform and said to Ali: "Sit in a tent so that the chiefs and distinguished personalities of Islam may shake hands with you and congratulate you".
The two shaykhs (Abu Bakr and Umar) congratulated Ali before all others and called him their maula.

Bukhari volume 5, Book 59 Number 637:
Imam Ali (a.s.) was so pure in spirit and straightforward in morality, according to the education he received from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.), that many shadows of the hidden future were lighted before him. He says: "...When the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) received the first revelation, Satan lamented so loudly that I asked the Holy Prophet: Who is lamenting and why? He replied, 'It is Satan who has given up hopes of acquiring complete sway over human minds. In his disappointment, he is lamenting over the chance lost. Verily Ali, you also hear whatever I hear, and you see whatever I see, only you are not a prophet. "Aren't you satisfied that I have married you to the first Muslim and the most knowledgeable of them?" the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, asked her. "Indeed, God, the Most High, looked thoroughly over the people of the earth and chose your father from them and made him a Prophet. Then He looked over them a second time and chose your (present) husband (ba'l) and made him a trustee of authority (wasi). God inspired me to marry you to him. Didn't you know, Fatima, that through God's kindness to you, your husband is the greatest of men in clemency, the most knowledgeable of men and the first of them in Islam."
Fatima laughed and rejoiced. Then the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, continued: "Fatima, 'Ali has eight molar teeth. No one before and after him will have the like.

Ali was the most loved person before God and the Prophet, and thus naturally the best of those who are loved. Anas ibn Malik says: "Every day, one of the children of the Ansar would do some task for the Prophet. One day my turn came. Umm Ayman brought a chicken dish before the Prophet and said: `Messenger of Allah! I have caught this chicken myself and cooked it for you.' He said: `O God! Send the best of (Thy) slaves that he may share with me in eating this chicken.' At that very moment someone knocked on the door and the Prophet said to me: `Anas! Open the door.' I said: `May God make it a man of the Ansar!' But I found 'Ali in front of the door, and I said: `The Prophet is busy.' Then I returned to stand in my place. Again there was a knock at the door, and the Prophet said: `Open the door.' Again I prayed that it would be someone from the Ansar. I opened the door and again it was 'Ali. I said: `The Prophet is busy.' Then I returned to stand in my place. Yet again there was a knock at the door, and the Prophet said: `Anas, go and open the door, and bring him in. You are not the first person to love your own people; that is not one of the Ansar. I went and brought 'Ali in, and he ate the chicken dish with the Prophet."

Al-Termathi in his authentic Sunan recorded that the Messenger of God said: "God, have Thy mercy on Ali. God, make the right and the truth with Ali in all situations."
Abu Na-eem recorded that Ibn Masood said: "The Holy Qur'an. . . has outward and inward meanings, and Ali Ibn Abu Talib has the knowledge of both.
Imam Ahmad reported that the Messenger said to his daughter Hazrat Fatima Al-Zahra a.s : "Are you not satisfied that I have married you to the one who is the earliest in Islam among my followers, their most knowledgeable, and their greatest in wisdom?"
The Messenger saw that Ali and the rest of the members of his House were the ones who possessed the needed qualifications.
"Ali gathered people at Al-Rahbah, then he said to them: `I ask in the name of God any Muslim who heard the Messenger of God saying on the Day of Ghadeer Khum what he said, to stand up. Thirty men stood up (and Abu Na-eem said: Many People stood and testified) that the Messenger of God held the hand of Ali and said to people: "Do you know that I have more authority over the believers than they have over themselves? They said: Yes, Messenger of God. He said: "Whoever I am his Moula (Guardian), this Ali is his Moula. God, love whoever loves him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him."

This tradition is narrated by Ibn Abi'l Hadid in his commentary on Nahju 'l-balaghah (vol. 1, p.201), where he says that it is one of the proofs of the prophethood of Muhammad since the tradition is quite explicit about the future and the unknown (ghayb), and there is no kind of hidden interpretation or ellipsis in it.

Ibn al-Athir narrates that the Prophet spoke to 'Ali and said: "0 'Ali, God has embellished you with things, no dearer embellishment than which exists before his slaves: resignation from the world has been appointed for you in such a way that neither do you profit from the world, nor it from you. On you has been bestowed the love of the wretched; they are proud of your leadership, and you also of their following you. Content is he who loves you, and is a true friend to you. And woe betide he who shows enmity towards you, and lies about you.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, ordered 'Ali, peace be upon him, to sit down. Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) never invited Imam Ali (a.s.) to Islam as he did others later on, because he was already a Muslim by God-granted nature. He was never polluted with the permissiveness of the Ignorant Era, and was never involved in any of its debased practices. As it is related: The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) informed Imam Ali (a.s.) of his Message and Call and he immediately believed in the truthfulness of the Final Message, and offered to receive and carry out the Messenger's orders. That was why he was given the attribute of: 'Karramallahu wajhah'.

The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) told Imam Ali (a.s.) about all that was transpiring. He asked him to sleep in his bed and cover himself with the Prophet's (s.a.w.) garment. Imam Ali (a.s.) asked if by doing so the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) would be safe. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) confirmed that he would. Imam Ali (a.s.) without further comment agreed to act as a decoy. Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) left the house, and, passing through the besiegers, he recited "And We have set a bar before them and a bar behind them, and (thus) have covered them so that they see not." Holy Qur'an (36:9)
Indeed, none of the disbelievers saw him. At daybreak the conspirators broke into the house of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) to commit their crime. When they entered the Holy Prophet's chamber, Imam Ali (a.s.) jumped out of the bed, shouting at them: "What do you want?" "Where is Muhammad?" they asked. "Did you appoint me to watch him?" he replied. "Didn't you say you would expel him from your town? Now he has left you..."
The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) discussed with Imam Ali (a.s.) what he should do during his emigration to Madinah. He told Imam Ali (a.s.) to stay behind in Mecca to hand the deposits of the people back to them, and then to join him in Madinah, bringing with him Fatimah al-Zahra' (a.s.) and the rest of the women of his household.
Within a few days the convoy arrived in Quba. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) received them. He embraced Imam Ali (a.s.) and wept for the pains and the hardships they had to suffer. Imam Ali (a.s.) had walked over the hot sands of the desert to reach the Holy Prophet. His feet were swollen and bloodied...then the Holy Prophet prayed for him. This produced instaneous relief.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. O Allah! Send your blessings to the head of your Messengers and the Last of your Prophets Muhammad ( pbuh&f ), and his pure and cleansed progeny. Glorious Quran Chapter 3 Verse 61: And unto him who disputeth with thee therein after the knowledge hath come unto thee, Say ! ( O' Our Apostle Muhammad ! ) ( Unto them ) come ye, let us summon our sons, and ( ye summon ) your sons, and ( we summon ) our women and ( ye ) your women, and ( we summon ) ourselves and then let us invoke the curse of God on the liars ! This verse refers to the famous event of ' Mubahila ' which took place in the year 10 A.H against the Christians of Najran. A deputation of 60 Christians of Najran headed by Abdul Masih their chief monkpriest came and discussed with the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) the personality of Hazrat Eesa ( as ). The Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) told them not to deify Jesus for he was only a mortal created by God, and not God Himself. Then they asked who the father of Jesus was. By this, they thought that since he was born without a father the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) would helplessly accept Jesus' father being God himself. In reply to this question was revealed the Verse Verily, similitude of Jesus with God is as the similitude of Adam; He created him out of dust then said He unto him BE, and he became. When the Christians did not agree to this line of reasoning, then this verse was revealed enjoining upon the Prophet ( pbuh&f ) to call the Christians to Mubahila. To this the Christians agreed and they wanted to return to their place and would have the Mubahila the next day. Early next morning the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) sent Salman al Farsi ( May Allah be well pleased with him ) to the open place, fixed outside the city for the historic event, to erect a small shelter for himself and those he intended to take along with him for the contest. On the opposite side appeared the Christian prists, while at the appointed hour the Christians witnessed the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) entering the field with Imam Hussain ( as ) in his lap, Imam Hasan ( as ) holding his finger, and walking beside him, Lady Fatima ( as ) and followed by Imam Ali al Murtaza ( as ). The Prophet ( as ) on reaching the appointed spot stationed himself with his daughter, her two sons and her husband, raising his hands towards the heaven said : Lord these are the People of my House The Chief Monk on knowing that the baby in the lap of the Prophet ( pbuh&f ) was his young grandson, Imam Hussain ( as ), the child walking holding the Prophet's ( pbuh&f ) hand was his first grandson, Imam Hasan ( as ), the Lady behind him was daughter, his only surviving issue was Fatima ( as ) the mother of the two children and the one who followed the Lady was his son in law, the husband of Fatima ( as ), addressed the huge crowd of the people who had gathered on the spot, and addressed them saying By God, I see the faces which, if they pray to God for mountains to move from their places, the mountains will immediately move ! O believers in the Jesus of Nazareth, I will tell you the truth that should ye fail to enter into some agreement with Muhammad and if these souls whom Muhammad has brought with him, curse you, ye will be wiped out of existence to the last day of the life of the earth ! The people readily agreed to the advice counseled by their Leader. They beseeched the Holy Prophet ( pbuh&f ) to give up the idea of the agreed Mubahila and requested for themselves to be allowed to continue their faith, offering to pay ' Jizya '.
Allah's messenger ( pbuh&f ) called Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussain and said : O Allah , these are my family ...
The Hashimites (the clan of the Prophet) were led by Ali Ibn Abu Talib who entered this battle relatively obscure and came out with unequalled military fame. His military performances became the most popular subject of the Arab caravans' conversations throughout the Arabian Peninsula.
The battle of Badr began when Utbah Ibn Rabiah, his son Al Walid and his brother Sheibah (all from the Ommayad clan) stood in front of the pagan army and asked the Prophet (saww) to send to them their equals for a dual. Hundreds of companions were around him and many of them were expecting to be called upon by the Prophet (saw) but he choose to start from his own family. The duty to fight first was most arduous, so he called upon Ali, Al Hamza and Obeidah Al Harith (all from the clan of the Prophet) to face the three warriors. Ali destroyed Al Walid and Al Hamza killed Utbah; then they both assisted Obeidah against his opponent Sheibah. Sheibah died immediately and Obeidah was the first martyr in this battle. He died after losing his leg.
When the general offensive began, hundreds of companions participated in the battle and offered sacrifices to please their Lord. But the members of the house of the Messenger (saww) distinguished themselves. Ali's valour was unique in this battle. When Hanzala Ibn Abu Sufyan faced him, Ali ripped his eyes with one blow of his sword. He annihilated Al Aus Ibn Saeed, and met Tuaima Ibn Oday and transfixed him with his spear, saying "You shall not dispute with us in God after today." The Messsenger (saw) took a handful of gravel when the battle was extremely heated. He threw it at the faces of the pagans saying "May your faces be disfigured. God, terrify their hearts and invalidated their feet." The pagans ran away, turning their faces to no one.
Hazrat Ali (as) was present in all the wars in which the Prophet (saw) participated, except the battle of Tabuk when he was ordered to stay in Medina in place of the Prophet (saw). He did not retreat in any battle nor did he turn his face away from any enemy. He never disobeyed the Prophet (sawas), so that the Prophet (saw) said, "Ali is never separated from the truth nor the Truth from Ali."
Muhammad (s.a.w) gave
the banner of the Muhajirin to his valiant cousin and son in-law Imam Ali
(a.s.)
He is Asad Allah .
Prophet of Allah gave Imam Ali (a.s.) the banner of the Muhajirin.
In Kundak , The attack was spearheaded, by Amru bin Abd-Wid al-Amiri, one of
the Quraish's leaders and a handful of his soldiers crossing the ditch.
They threatened the Muslims inside their city. Ali bin Abi Talib (a.s.),
accompanied by a number of Muslims, hurried to the place where Amru and
his soldiers crossed the ditch, to prevent any further attempts.
Amru bin Abd-Wid arrogantly, went on galloping in front of the
Muslims, issuing, threat and menacing them. He spoke proudly about his
claimed bravery, calling out:
"Anyone ready to fight?"
Imam Ali (a.s.) stood up and said to the Prophet (s.a.w.):
"I can fight him, O Prophet of Allah".
"Sit down", the Prophet (s.a.w.) ordered him, "he is Amru".
Ibn Abd-Wid repeated his call. He scolded the Muslims and mocked them
saying:
"Where is your paradise you claim where anyone among you goes to inhabit
if you are killed? Won't you nominate someone from among you to fight me?"
"I can fight him, O Messenger of Allah", Ali, said for the second time,
rising to his feet.
"Sit down", the Prophet (s.a.w.) ordered him again, "he is Amru".
Imam Ali (a.s.) did not care whether he was Amru or someone else. So, he said to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.):"Even if he is Amru!"
The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) finally conceded and gave his permission to Ali (a.s.) and handed over his sword Dhul-Fiqar to him. He made him put on his (the Prophet's) coat of mail and wear his turban.
Then, the Prophet
(s.a.w.) raised his hands in prayer:
"O Lord! This is my brother and cousin. Do not leave me alone. You are the
best of inheritors".
Imam Ali (a.s.) went to the battlefield and said Ibn Abd-Wid:
"O Amru! You have made covenant with Allah that whenever a man from the
Quraish offers you two choices respecting a combat you accept one of
them"."Yes" , said Ibn Abd-Wid.
"Then," Imam Ali (a.s.) replied, "I call you to Allah and His Messenger (s.a.w.)
and Islam".
"I do not need that", he said.
"Then", the Imam said, "I call you to fight".
"I hate to shed your blood," Amru replied "your father was a friend of
mine".
"But", the Imam retorted, "by Allah I like to kill you".
Amru got very angry and attacked Ali (a.s.). The Imam repulsed his assault
with his usual aplomb. He killed him and shouts of "Allahu-akbar" and
"Praise be to Allah" rose from the ranks of the Muslims.
When Ali (a.s.) returned triumphantly, the Messenger received him by
saying:
"The combat of Ali bin Abi-Talib with Amru bin Abd-Wid is better than the
deeds of my ummah till Doomsday."
"La Feta Illa Ali La Seyfe Illa Zulfikar"
In Khyber "Tomorrow, I will entrust this standard to a man who is an
intrepid attacker and who never flees.
Who loves Allah and His Messenger and (in turn) is loved by Allah and the
Messenger. Allah, the
Glorious will deliver Khyber at his hand."
" The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said at Khyber: 'The next day I shall give the standard to a man through whom Allah will bring victory.' The companions spent the night asking each other: Who is this man whom the Holy Prophet meant? They came in the morning to the Messenger and every one of them was hoping that he would be the man of the standard. 'Where is Ali bin Abi Talib?' the Prophet asked. 'He is suffering from inflammation of the eyes,' they said. The Prophet sent for him. When Ali was brought to the Prophet he treated Ali's eyes with his blessed saliva and prayed for him. Ali's eyes cured instantly as if they had not been sore. On receiving the standard from the
Prophet, Ali asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I fight them until they become Muslims like us?' The Messenger said: 'Go on, until you reach their fortress. Invite them to Islam and inform them of their duty towards Allah and Islam. By Allah, if He guides one single soul through you to the right way, it would be better for you than to own a huge treasure.'"Then the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali set out with the standard until he reached the fortress.
The Imam Jaffar Sadiq a.s says, Let every one attacked by disease think of the prophet, whose disease was more severe than that of any other. It is related that Gabriel brought forty dirhams (Drachms) of camphor from paradise to sprinkle on the corpse of the prophet, who divided it into three parts, one for himself, another for Ali, and the third for Fatima. My visiting the prophet one day when he was sick, found him asleep, with his head in the lap of an extremely beautiful man, who told Ali to take his place. The prophet on awaking said it was Gabriel.
During the last sickness of the prophet, while he was lying with his head
in Ali's lap, and Abbâs was standing before him and brushing away the flies
with his cloak, he opened his eyes and asked Abbŕs to become his executor,
pay his debts, and support his family. Abbâs said he was an old man with a
large family, and could not do it. Mohammed then proffered the same to Ali,
who was so much affected that he could not command utterance for some time,
but as soon as he could speak, promised with the greatest devotion to
perform the prophet's request. Mohammed, after being raised into a sitting
posture, in which he was supported by Ali, ordered Bilŕl to bring his
helmet, called Zooljabeen; his coat of mail, Zatul-Fazool; his banner, Akâb;
his sword, Zoolfakâr; his turbans, Sahâb and Tahmeeah; his two party-colored
garments, his little staff, and his walking cane, Memshook. In relating the
story Abbâs remarked that he had never before seen the party-colored scarf,
which was so lustrous as nearly to blind the eyes. The prophet now addressed
Ali, saying, Jibrâeel brought me this article and told me to put it into the
rings of my mail, and bind it on me for a girdle. He then called for his two
pairs of Arab shoes, one pair of which had been patched. Next he ordered the
shirt he wore on the night of the Marâj, or ascent to heaven, and the shirt
he wore at the battle of Ohod. He then called for his three caps, one of
which he wore in journeying, another on festivals, and the third when
sitting among his companions. He then told Bilal to bring his two mules,
Shahbâ and Duldul; his two she-camels. Ghazbâ and Sahbâ; and his two horses,
Jinâh and Khyrdam. Jinâh was kept at the door of the mesjid for the use of a
messenger, and Khyrdam was mounted by the prophet at the battle Ohod, where
Jibrâeel cried, Advance, Khyrdam. Last he called for his ass Yafoor'.
Mohammed now directed Abbâs to take Aly's place and support his back. He
then said, Rise, O Ali, and take these, my property, while I yet live, that
no one may quarrel with you about them after I am gone.
"When I rose, said Ali, my feet were so cramped that it was with the
utmost difficulty that I could move. Having taken the articles and animals
to my house, I returned and stood before the prophet, who, on seeing me,
took his ring from his right hand, pointing the way of truth, and put it on
my hand, the house being full of the Benee Hâshim and other Musulmâns, and
while from weakness his head nodded to the right and left, he cried aloud, O
company of Musulmâns, Ali is my brother, my successor and khaleefah among my
people and sect; he will pay my debts and cancel my engagements. O ye sons
of Hâshim and Abdulmutalib, and ye other Musulmâns, Be not hostile to Ali,
and do not oppose him, lest ye be led astray, and do not envy him, nor
incline from him to another, lest ye become infidels. He then ordered Abbâs
to give his place to Ali. Abbâs replied, Do you remove an old man to scat a
child in his place ? The prophet repeated the order, and the third time
Abbâs rose in anger, and Ali took his place. Mohammed finding his uncle
angry, said to him, Do nothing to cause me to leave the world offended with
you, and my wrath send you to hell. On hearing this, Abbŕs went back to his
place, and Mohammed directed Ali to lay him down.
The prophet then said to
Bilâl, Bring my two sons, Hasan and Husayn. When they were presented he
pressed them to his bosom, smelt and kissed those two flowers of the
garden of prophecy. Ali, fearing they would trouble the prophet, was about
to take them away, but he said, Let them be, that I may smell them, and
they smell me, and we prepare to meet each other, for after I am gone
great calamities will befall them, but may God curse those that cause them
to fear and do them injustice. O Lord, I commit them to thee, and to the
worthy of the faithful, namely, Aly-bin-Abutalib. The prophet then
dismissed the people and they went away, but Abbas, and his son Fazl, and
Aly-bin-Ahutâlib, and those belonging to the household of the prophet,
remained. Abbâs then said to the prophet, If the khalâfat is established
among us, the Benee Hashim, assure us of it, that we may rejoice; but if
you foresee that they will treat us unjustly and deprive us of the
khalâfat, commit us to your companions. Mohammed replied, After I am gone,
they will weaken and overcome you: at which declaration all the family
wept, and moreover despaired of the prophet's life.
He repeatedly said, "O ye people, I go before you, and when you meet me at the fountain of Kouser, I shall demand bow you conducted towards the two great things I left among you, namely, the book of God and my family. Beware then that you act not contrary to my command respecting them. Verily, the holy and omniscient Lord has told me that these two things cannot be separated till they rejoin me at the fountain of Kouser. These two I place among you. Usurp not precedence of my family, nor forsake them, nor do any thing against them, lest ye be destroyed. Do not attempt to teach them, for they are wiser than you. Turn not from my faith, nor draw your swords against each other. Know ye, that Ali-bin-Abutâlib, my cousin, is my successor, and will fight for the true meaning of the Qurân as I did for its communication. Ho spoke on this subject to many assemblies of the people.
The Prophet (p.b.u.h) then said to Ali: "Come near me." Ali came near as the Prophet asked; he (P.b.u.h) then held Fatima's hand and put it on his chest for a long time, and held Ali's hand in his other hand. When the Prophet (P.b.u.h) tried to speak, he was overtaken by tears and was unable to do so. Therefore, Ali, Fatima, Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain cried when they saw him crying.
Fatima then said: "Messenger of Allah! You have broken my heart and brought sorrow to me with your crying. You are the Master of all Prophets and the trusted Prophet of your Lord; You are the beloved Prophet of Allah! Who do I have for my children after you? Who do I have to protect me from the humiliation which will inflict me after you? Who does Ali, your brother and the helper of your religion, have after you? Who is to (attend to) Allah s revelation and affair?"
Fatima then broke down crying and embraced him together with All, Hassan and Hussain (a.s). The Prophet (P.b.u.h) raised his head, and while holding Fatima's hand, he placed it in Ali's hand and said:
"Abu Al-Hassan, she is Allah's and His Messenger's, Muhammad, trust to you. Therefore, keep Allah s and His Messenger's trust by protecting her. Surely I know you will.
Ali, this (Fatima) by Allah, is the Mistress of all women of Paradise; this, by Allah, is (like) Maryam Al-Kubra.
By Allah, before I reached this state, I asked Allah (certain things) for you and I, and He surely has given me what I asked.
Ali, Execute that which Fatima commands you to do, for I have commanded her to (perform certain affairs) which Gabriel ordered me to do.
Be informed, Ali, that I am satisfied with him who my daughter is satisfied with, so is my Lord and the angels.
Ali, Cursed is he who oppresses her;
Cursed is he who usurps her right; Cursed is he who violates her sanctity..." The Prophet (P.b.u.h) then embraced Fatima (a.s), kissed her hand and said: "May your father be your sacrifice, Fatima."
At that moment, the Messenger of Allah (P.b.u.h) was putting his head on Ali's chest; but his love for Fatima kept driving him to embrace and kiss her repeatedly. He (P.b.u.h) cried until his tears made his beard and shirt wet.
Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain (a.s) began crying and kissing his feet; when Imam Ali (a.s) tried to separate them, the Prophet said: "Let them smell me and let me smell them;"
Almighty God described the nature of ritual prayers and the way to perform them through Gabriel to the Prophet, who taught it to Ali and Khadijah and also ordered congregational ritual prayers.
Also Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal narrates from Ibn Abbas, who said that he, Abu Bakr, Abu Ubaida Bin Jarra, and others were with the Prophet when he put his hand on Ali's shoulder and said: "You are foremost in faith in Islam among all the Muslims, and you are to me as Aaron was to Moses, O Ali! He who thinks he is my friend while he is your enemy is a liar."
It is narrated from Jabir Bin Abdullah Ansari that one day in the presence of Muhajirs (Meccan emigrants living in Medina) and Ansars ("helpers" of Medina who received the Muslim emigrants into their community), that the Prophet said to Ali, "O Ali! If a man offers complete prayers to Allah, and then doubts that you and your family are superior to all other beings, his abode shall be Hell."
The Apostle of God, may God bless him and his family, said: "The angels
bless me and 'Ali for seventy years, because (for a time) only 'Ali and I
raised the testimony to heaven that there is no god but God and Muhammad is
the Apostle of God."
When the Holy Prophet of Islam was divinely commanded to migrate to Yasrib (Medina), he called Ali, disclosed his secret to him, gave him the people's trusts to be returned to their owners and then said, I have to migrate, but you must lie in my bed'. Ali sincerely obeyed the Holy Prophet and lay in his bed, thus devotedly exposing himself to the dangers that threatened the Holy Prophet of Islam.
Ali's self-sacrifice was so sincere and significant that God praised it in the Holy Qur'an.
Prophet had said. Aqzakurn Ali ibne Abi Taleb (the most just among you is Ali).
Holy Prophet had declared at Khaiber Karearan ghzaira farrarin' the repeated attacker who knew no running away. History is there to vouch: that it was Ali who stayed with the Holy Prophet in the worst of the situations in tile battles for the faith, wizen most of the companions had deserted him and had fled away, disappearing for days together. The Holy Qur'an has a reference to this fact. Besides, in the Muslim World as a whole, none but Ali is called A'sadullah', the Lion of God, and it is Ali in whose praise the Muslims sing even to this day La fata illa Ali la saif illa Zulfiqar', i.e., there is no youth braver than Ali and there is no sword save the unfailing Zulfiqar.
If the nearest to the Holy Prophet was the one wanted, who else was there save Ali about whom the Holy Prophet had openly said: "I and Ali are of the same Divine Light. "O' Ali thy flesh: is my flesh and thy blood is my blood".
Similar to that is the story of (the document of renunciation (bara'a) which the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, gave to Abu Bakr so that he could abrogate the alliance with the polytheists through it. When he had traveled far away, Gabriel, peace be on him, descended to the Prophet, may God bless him and his family. He told him: "God recites His greeting to you and says to you that the act of renunciation should not be performed for you except by yourself or a man (related) to you."
The Apostle of God, may God bless him and his family, summoned 'Ali, peace be on him, and told him: "Ride my camel, al-'Adba', and go after Abu Bakr. Take (the document of) renunciation from him and go with it to Mecca. You abrogate the alliance with the polytheists through it. Give Abu Bakr the choice of continuing to ride with you or of returning to me." The Commander of the faithful, peace be on him, rode al-'Adba; the camel of the Apostle of God, may God bless him and his family and caught up with Abu Bakr. The latter was disturbed at being caught up with by him.
"Why have you come, Abu al-Hasan?" he asked as he greeted him. "Are you going to travel with me? Or is it for some other reason?" "The Apostle of God, may God bless him and his family, ordered me to come after you," the Commander of the faithful, peace be on him, said, "to take the verses of renunciation (bara'a) from you and to abrogate the treaty with the polytheists through them. He ordered me to let -you choose between going with me or returning to him.""Indeed, I will return to him," he said.
He went back to the Prophet, may God bless him and his family. When he came to him, he said: "Apostle of God, you regarded me as worthy to undertake a mission on account of which men craned their necks towards me. When I had set out on it, you dismissed me from it. What has come down in revealed message (Qur'an) concerning me?" "The trusty one, Gabriel, peace be on him, came down to me from God, the Mighty and Exalted," the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, answered, "with (the command) that:
'The act of renunciation should not be performed for you except by yourself or a man (related) to you.' 'Ali is related to me and it should only be performed for me by 'Ali."
"'Ali, go to Sa'd," he, peace be on him, told the Commander of the faithful, peace be on him, "and take the standard from him. You be the one to enter with it."
Ali's being left in the bed of the Holy Prophet on the eve of his migration to Madina.
Ali's being entrusted wit/i the deposits of the people of Mecca, which were with the Holy Prophet, to he restored to the respective owners, the next day to the Emigration.
Ali's being declared as the Brother of the Holy Prophet, when at Madina, each believer according to his personal merits, was made the brother of another like him.
Ali's being given the hand of the Holy Lady Fatima a.s the only surviving issue and the most loved one of the Holy Prophet.
Ali's being sent to take away the verses of the Sura-e- Tauba (i.e., Immunity) from Abu Bakr who was already sent with it, to be read out to the infidels in Mecca, as one of the Holy Prophet himself
Ali's being left in charge of the affairs at Medina, in the place of the holy Prophet, during his absence on the expedition to Tabuk.'
The Holy Prophet's declaring .- "I and Ali are of one and the same divine Light".
"O' Ali! Thou art to me as Aaron was to Moses, save that there is no apostleship after me".
"O Ali! Thou art my brother in this world and in the next".
"O Ali! Thou art to me, as is a head to a body".
"O Ali! Thou art to me, as is a soul to a body".
"O Ali! Thy flesh is my flesh and thy blood is my blood, thou sees what I see and thou Hearst what I hear, save there is no apostleship after me.
Ali was demonstrated to the world, before the multitude on the occasion of the historic Mubahala' as the Nafs' or the Self, or the Soul' of the Holy Prophet.
Holy Prophet prayed :- "Lord! Be Thou a friend to the one who is the friend of Ali, And be Thou an enemy to the one who is the enemy of Ali, Help Thou the one who helped the Ali, And discard Thou the one who discarded Ali"
Holy Prophet was Omar, who paid his Bait' saying:"Bakhkin Bakhkhin laka ibne Abi Taleb Asbahta Maulayee wa Maula kulla Mominin wa Mommatin".
'"Cheer and cheer be to thee O' son of Abu Taleb! Thou hast dawned as my Lord and the Lord of all the faithful men and faithful women.
Ibn Majah reported, in his Sunan, that the Messenger said: "God has commanded me to love four persons and informed me that He loves them. When he was asked who they were, he said, "Ali is of them (repeating that three times), Abu Zahr, Salman and Al-Miqdad.
This young brilliant Ayesha was, one day, questioning him: "Now am not I better than Khadija? She was a widow; old, and had lost her looks: you love me better than you did her ?"- "No by Allah!" answered Mahomet: "No, by Allah I She believed in me when none else would believe. In the whole world I had but one friend, and she was that! - Seid, his Slave, also believed in him; these with his young Cousin Ali, Abu Taleb's son, were his first converts".
Allah's Messenger said: 'As for you Ali, you are my son-in-law and the fat her of my offspring; you are from me and I am from you.'
Um Salama, the Prophet's wife, narrated that Allah's Messenger (P.b.u.h) was present in her house when Fatima brought him an earthenware pot filled with wheat cooked with milk. He (P.b.u.h) said: "Call in your husband and two sons for me." Thus, Ali, Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain came and joined him in eating the food. Meanwhile, he (p.b.u.h) sat on a bench, covered with a Khairban cloak.
He also reported that Um Salama said: "Allah s Messenger ( P.b.u.h) covered Fatima, All, Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain, including himself with a garment and read this verse: 'And Allah only wished to remove all abomination from you, ye Members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless."She then added: "So I came to join them when the Prophet Said: Stay where you are, you will have a good conclusion."
"Allah's Messenger (P.b.u.h) said to Fatima: 'Bring your bright cloak; and put his hands on them and said , 'O Allah, these are the progeny of Muhammad, thus bless and praise them for surely you are praiseworthy and Exalted."
Imam Sadiq (a.s) and asked him: "Did the Commander of the Faithful perform ablution (Ghusl) after abluting the Messenger of Allah (P.b.u.h) upon his death? "His answer was:"The Prophet was pure and safeguarded all impurities; yet the Commander of the Faithful (a.s) did so and this became a customary practice (Sunnah)."
In Sahih of Muslim:The Prophet (PBUH&HF) said: "The
[Islamic] religion will continue until the Hour
(day of resurrection), having twelve Caliphs for you, all of them will be
from Quraysh."
The traditions assert that the number of authorities are twelve and all of them are from Quraysh, and, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) clarified it in his speech that they shall be from the Quraysh when he said: "Surely Imams will be from the Quraysh, they have been planted in this line through Hashim. It would not suit others nor would others be suitable as heads of affairs."
The Prophet (PBUH&HF) said: "The affairs of people will
continue to be conducted (well) as long
as they are governed by the twelve men, all of them from Quraysh."
I am the chief of the Prophets and Ali ibn Abi Talib is the chief of successors, and after me my successors shall be twelve, the first of them being Ali ibn Abi Talib and the last of them being Al Mahdi."
Narrated Jabir ibn Samura: The Prophet (PBUH&HF) said:
"This matter (life) will not end, until
it is passed by twelve Caliphs." He then whispered a sentence. I asked my
father what the Prophet
said. He said, the Prophet added: "All of them will be from Quraysh."
"Certainly my Caliphs and my legatees and the Proofs of Allah upon his creatures after me are twelve. The first of them is my brother and the last of them is my (grand) son."
"Islam will continue to be triumphant until there have been twelve Caliphs, all of them from Quraysh."
"There will be after me twelve Amir (Prince/Ruler), all of them from Quraysh."
"This religion remains standing until there are twelve vicegerents over you, all of them agreeable to the nation, all of them from Quraysh."
He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who is your brother?" He said, "Ali ibn Abi Talib" Then they asked, "And who is your son?"
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) replied, "Al Mahdi, the one who will fill the earth with justice and equity like it would be brimming with injustice and tyranny. And by the One Who has raised me as a warner and a give of good tidings, even if a day remains for the life of this world, the Almighty Allah will prolong this day to an extent till he sends my son Mahdi, then he will make Ruhullah 'Isa ibn Maryam (a.s.) to descend and pray behind him (Mahdi). And the earth will be illuminated by his radiance. And his power will reach to the east and the west."
"The Prophet (PBUH&HF) said: "Islam will continue to be triumphant until there have been twelve Caliphs," So people said Takbir and made noise, then he said a light word I didn't hear. I [Jabir bin Samura] said to my father: What did he say? He said "All of them are from Quraysh."
Narrated Jabir ibn Samura: I heard the Prophet saying, "There will be twelve commanders (Amir)." He then said a sentence which I did not hear. My father said, the Prophet added, "All of them will be from Quraysh."
"I and Ali and Hasan and Husayn and nine of the descendants of Husayn are the purified ones and the infallible."
"This nation will always remain straight in its affairs, and triumphant against the enemies, till twelve Caliphs will be among them; all of them from Quraysh. Then there will be discord and confusion.
"Every prophet has a vicegerent and inheritor and Ali (A.S.) is my vicegerent and inheritor."
"The enmity of their enemies will not harm them."
"There will be twelve upright Imams for this nation. Those who try to disgrace them will not succeed; all of them shall be from the Quraysh."
"The affair of the people will continue as long as twelve men rule over them."
"This religion will remain till twelve Imams from Quraysh (will pass), then when they expire the earth will swallow its inhabitants."
"The affair of this nation will always be apparent till the twelve Imams will rise, all of them from the Quraysh."
"We were sitting one evening with Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud). We were reciting the Qur'an, then a man asked him: "O Abu Abdur-Rahman, did you ask the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) how many Caliphs will rule this nation?" Abdullah said: "No one asked me about this before you from the time I arrived in Iraq." He said: "We asked him (the Prophet s.a.w.s.), he said: "Twelve, (like) the number of the Chiefs of Bani Israel."
Ibn Mas'ud said: "The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: "There will be Caliphs after me, whose number is like those of the companions of Musa."
Finally a treaty was signed between the Meccan representative Suhail bin Amr and the Holy Prophet. The Prophet instructed Ali, his Vicegerent, to write down the treaty at his dictation, and it began thus “In the name of God, the most Gracious and Merciful’, Suhail objected to this, and said that it should begin as the Meccans used to do. Thus: “In Thy name, O God!” The Prophet agreed and asked Ali to write “Bismeka Allah Hoomma’. Next he dictated:
“This is the Treaty made between Muhammad the Apostle of God and Suhail son of Amr.” Suhail again raised an objection and said that had the Meccans acknowledged him as an Apostle of God they would never have taken up arms against him1.
Instead of “the Apostle of God”, Suhail asked the Prophet to have his father’s name written. The Prophet again yielded, but Ali had already written the words, “Muhammad the Apostle of God”2.
The Prophet bade Ali to erase the words under objection, but as Ali hesitated, the Prophet himself taking the writing materials obliterated the words and had the words, “son of Abdullah” substituted in place of “Apostle of God”. 3
"Ali, Son of Abu Talib, Son-in-Law and first cousin of
Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him), father of
Imam Hasan and the greatest Martyr Imam Husain, the Lion of God, Gateway of
Knowledge, the mightiest of
mighty; does not need an introduction, He was at the same time master of the
Pen and Sword -- a rare combination. Even today in the battle fields the Cry
of "Ya Ali !" resounds, invoking his help. Sportsmen, Wrestlers and
Athletes, taking part in manly games, chant the Slogan of "Ya Ali !" for
their victory. On the other hand, the pious devoted entirely to the service
of God, almost all of them trace the spiritual lineage from Ali and believe
him to be the Fountain Head of all Knowledge."
"Ali is absent today from our midst only physically. His
soul even to this day is the greatest spiritual
resort to everyone who seeks the help of God through his medium. Thousands
and thousands of people call
out to him in their difficulties, and the word "Ya Ali Madad", automatically
comes to them. A famous prayer
known as "NADEY ALI" (Call Ali) is recited wherever abound the lovers of
Ali."
"Here the garrison came out in great force, and on that
day every attack made by the Muslims was repulsed.
"Tomorrow," said the Prophet, "will I give the standard unto a man whom God
and His messenger love. God will give us the victory by his hands; he is not
one who turneth back in flight."
He prophesied at the same time, addressing
Ali that he would similarly have to yield on a similar occasion in his
own time. This prophecy was fulfilled when a treaty was concluded
between Ali and Muawiya some thirty years later.
"In his previous campaigns the Prophet had used relatively small flags as standards, but to Khyber he had brought a great black standard made from a cloak of A'isha's. They called it 'the Eagle', and this he now gave to Ali." - Martin Lings in his book: "Muhammad - his life based on the earliest sources"
"Ali was one of the most courageous and able men in the Muslim army. He was appointed the standard-bearer at the battles of both Badr and Khaybar.
'The Apostle of God said on
the day of Khaybar: "I shall certainly give this banner to a man who loves
God
and His Apostle and through whom God will give victory." Umar ibn al-Khattab
said: "I never wished for a
leadership except on that day." And he also said: "And so I leapt up towards
it hoping to claim it as a right.
" And the Apostle of God summoned Ali, the son of Abu Talib, and gave it to him and said "Go! And do not turn aside until God gives you victory."
"When the Prophet left to go
on his longest expedition, to Tabuk, Ali was left in charge at Medina.
According to some accounts, Ali felt insulted to be left with the women and
children while, according
to others, rumours spread that Ali had been left behind because it was
feared he would bring misfortune
to the expedition. In any case, Ali went to the Prophet voicing his
discontent at being left behind. It
was at this time, according to numerous Sunni and Shi'i Traditionists, that
the famous Hadith of Manzilat
Harun (position of Aaron) was revealed. According to this Tradition,
Muhammad said to Ali: " Are you not
content to be with respect to me as Aaron was to Moses, except that after me
there shall be no other Prophet.
" The implication was that Ali was to be Muhammad's chief assistant in his lifetime and his successor after him."
"It must be borne in mind
that after the death of the Prophet the belief in the Wilayat of the Imams
from his
progeny is as important a part of our religion as the belief in the Wilayat
of the Prophet in his lifetime. This
is supported by the Tradition according to which the Prophet is reported to
have said at ‘Ghadeer Khum', "Am I not more precious to you than your
own-selves." This is an echo of the Qur'anic verse which says,
"The Prophet is more dear to the ‘Momins' than their own-selves to them." It is said, that in response to this question by the Prophet, when the ‘Momins' said "Yes, you are dearer to us than our own lives", the Prophet said, "O God, be witness to their admission".
After this he said, "‘Ali is the master of one who acknowledges me to be his master. O God love those who love ‘Ali. Help those who help ‘Ali. Desert those who desert ‘Ali. Let the truth accompany ‘Ali wherever he goes."
"As the stars in the sky are the source of guidance to the travelers, the Holy Ones of my Ahl al Bayt (the Imams descended from the Prophet's family) are the source of guidance for the people. And, as the stars will remain in the sky until the day of judgment, the earth will never be without a Divine Guide from my Ahl al Bayt, that is an Imam". The Christians brought a great delegation of clergy and learned scholars whereas Prophet Muhammad summoned Hazrat Ali, Bibi Fatima, and his grand-children Hassan, and Hussain and said: "O Allah, these are the Members of my Household," and led them to the agreed location.

Abi Bakr Suyuti (d 911 A.H.) in his commentary "Al-Dur al-Manthur",

Sahih", Hakim Nishaburi
(d 405 A.H.) in "Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn", Ahmad ibn Husayn Bayhaqi (d
458 A.H.) in "Sunan"
(all three of whom have considered the Kisa' tradition as authentic),
Muhammad ibn Jarir Tabari
(d 315 A.H.), Ibn Munzir Muhammad ibn Ibrahim (d 319 A.H.), Ibn Mardawayh
Isfahani, and Ahmad ibn
Musa (d 410 A.H.) have quoted Ummu Salamah, the wife of the Holy Prophet (s)
as saying that the
verse "... Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O
people of the House! And
to purify you a thorough purifying (33:33)" was revealed in her house. At
that time, `Ali, Fatimah,
Hasan, and Husayn (peace be upon them all) were in her house. The Holy
Prophet (s) spread his cloak
over them and stated: "These are the members of my Household, and Allah has
purified them of all
(sins and faults and uncleanness)."
B. Ahmad bin Muhammad bin
Hanbal, the Hanbali Imam, (d 241 A.H.), in "Musnad" 229/2 quotes Ummu
Salamah as saying: "The Holy Prophet (s) was in my house. Fatimah (`a) came
to her father holding a stone bowl filled with "harirah" (type of food made
up of flour, milk, and vegetable oil). The Holy Prophet (s) stated:
Invite your husband and two sons to come as well." `Ali, Hasan, and Husayn
also came there and all sat down to eat "harirah".
Then, the Holy Prophet (s)
was sitting on a cloak in his resting place and I was reciting the
prayer in the chamber. At this time, Almighty Allah revealed the verse
"Allah only desires to ...". The Holy Prophet (s) covered `Ali, Fatimah,
Hasan, and Husayn (peace be upon them all) with the cloak and then stretched
his hand toward the sky and said: "Allah! These are the Members of my
Household, so purify them of all uncleanness'. Ummu Salamah said: "I asked
him: "Am I also with you?" He stated: "You are on good and virtue" (but did
not say that you are a member of my Household)'."
This tradition has also been narrated by Ahmad ibn Muhammad Tahawi (d 321 A.H.) in "Mushkil al-Athar" 332 and 334; Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" 268 and Muhib Tabari (d 694 A.H.) in "Zakhair al-`Uqba" 23 have related this tradition. In continuation of this tradition, Tabari has written that the Prophet (s) stated: "I am a friend of whosoever is friendswith them and an enemy of whosoever is an enemy of them."
the Holy Prophet (s) for
nine months went to the house of `Ali (`a) five times a day at the time
of daily prayers and called on the members of the house to keep up the
prayer. Each time, he recited the "tathir verse".
At the battle at the Fort of
Khyber, Hazrat Ali had stayed behind, and when the Muslims were
losing hopelessly, Prophet Muhammad called for the help of Hazrat Ali in his
prayer to Allah.
Ya Ali Bilutfika Adrikani! O Ali, come to my help by Thy Favor! Hazrat Ali
came riding and to
the rescue of his team; he held the door of the fort across the moat,
miraculously, with one arm,
until all the Muslims had crossed over. This resulted in victory for the
Muslims. Songs and Qawalis
about this victory abound in the Muslim world even today and here is a
selection for your enjoyment
and don't forget to look at the Taawiz with Naad-e Ali inscribed beautifully
on this silver case.
Ali-ibn-Abi Talib (a.s.) said: 'I asked the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w a.) as such: 'O Messenger of
Allah! is Mahdi from our progeny or from others? the holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied: rather he is from
us. religion shall terminate by his hands just as it commenced from us. people shall be delivered from
seditions through Mahdi just as they got delivered from polytheism through us. through Mahdi (a.s.) Allah
will create a feeling of intimacy between their hearts (after hatred and sedition) just as he created
intimacy amongst them through us after hatred and polytheism...
'After me, shall come the caliphs. after the caliphs will come the rulers and after the rulers will come
the kings. then oppressors will follow them and after them will emerge a man from my Ahl-e-Bayt who shall
fill the earth with justice as it was filled with injustice....
'After me, seditions (disasters) will arise the deliverence
of which would not be possible. in those seditions, wars and sporadic fightings would occur. thereafter,
more severe seditions will arise such that if seditions would calm down in one place, the same would
continue in another place. things would extend so far that there would remain no arab house and no muslim
who would not be affected by it. it would be then that a man from my progeny will emerge.
